Swindon fans FUME as new signing leaves less than a month after joining

Swindon Town fans have taken to social media and FUME as their new signing leaves less than a month after joining the club.

Pierce Sweeney has left the Robins by mutual consent after the 26-year-old Irishman was one of two signings made since the end of last season.

Manager John McGreal and his assistant have left, while players were not paid their June wages on time amid ongoing takeover and financial problems.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Swindon Town can confirm that defender Pierce Sweeney’s contract at the club has been mutually terminated, meaning he is now a free agent.

Pierce has decided that his future will not lie with the club due to personal reasons.

Pierce has issued the following statement: “I would like to thank Swindon Town FC for the opportunity to be part of the club, however due to family circumstances at this current moment I am unable to fulfil relocating to be part of the team.

“My family and I have thought about this decision and feel our commitments require us to remain in Exeter for the foreseeable future. I am grateful to the Chairman, Lee Power for allowing this to happen.

I wish all the fans, players and staff a successful season.”

We would like to wish Pierce the best of luck for his future career.

As mentioned, Swindon players and staff have not been paid for June amid ongoing problems regarding a takeover of the club.

Pre-season training has also been delayed until next Monday, having been due to commence this week among many other EFL sides who play their friendlies on Saturday.

Chief executive Steve Anderson also left the club and it is understood that director of football Paul Jewell may have quit.

The Robins had nine players under contract following the end of last season and have since signed two more – that includes goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott and defender Pierce Sweeney, the latter leaving Swindon after just a month.

It is another twist in a up and down history for the club, who won the League Two title on average points per game in 2020 after the season was ended early because of the pandemic.

Last season they struggled in League One, ending the campaign second from bottom, having seen promotion-winning manager Richie Wellens leave for Salford in November.

He was replaced by experienced former Plymouth, Chesterfield and Oldham boss John Sheridan, surprising some fans considering his dismal record, but he left in April after being unable to turn their fortunes around. Shocker right?

In February, chairman Lee Power said Swindon were “on the brink” of bankruptcy having warned in May 2020 that they could go into administration after he failed to overturn an injunction to prevent him selling the club to an American company.

Power is currently facing two separate cases against the club over Swindon’s ownership – one in the courts and one from the FA.

Minority shareholder Clem Morfuni has been trying to buy Swindon and has been backed by the club’s supporters’ trust, however a court injunction is in place to stop Power from putting the club into administration amid a legal case over who is able to buy the club.

Power is facing FA charges regarding the ownership and funding of the club, as in April, Power, along with sports agency First Touch Pro Management and its company director Michael Standing, were charged with breaching FA rules on ownership.

Standing, a former Aston Villa trainee who had spells at other clubs including Bradford City and Walsall, had previously stated he acquired 50% of Swindon’s holding company when Power bought the Robins in 2013.

But under FA regulations, agents are not allowed to own clubs because of potential conflicts of interest. Crisis deepens.

@adyson87: This is what happens when the fa and efl approve total crooks like Lee power. Rinsed every last penny out of the club, said he could fund us until the sale went through. He lied in court. Since then he’s stopped paying wages and it’s come out today he’s not paid rent 4 14 months!

@JAMBurgoyne: @Official_STFC I’ve got last year’s away kit, should I just bring it along with boots/shinpads to Melksham. #STFC

@Tom_Hancock_: Players leaving a day after their contract began is never a good sign… I just beg that Swindon aren’t another Bury. How much longer does this have to go on for?

@GeorgeGodwin0: Fuck me could it possibly get any worse 😂😂😂😂

@AJaytrain1: I can’t blame him for leaving but don’t come out with a load of bullshit!

@AdamPitt88: Don’t blame the bloke. Prob had to say some bullshit about Power just to get gone.

@IsaacPollard12: Even I can hold down a job for longer than that fucking hell
