Swansea’s Jake Bidwell labelled ‘a shithouse’ for what he did to Reading fan

Swansea’s Jake Bidwell has been labelled ‘a shithouse’ for what he did to a Reading fan during the Carabao Cup First Round clash in midweek.

The Welsh outfit won for the first time under Russell Martin as they cruised into the second round thanks to a 3-0 victory at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

The Swans were beaten at Blackburn on the opening day of the Championship season, so it was vital an impressive performance was put in to ease fans’ initial concerns.

The Royals have now lost two from two in 2021-22 after their weekend defeat at Stoke City.

This was a meeting of two Championship clubs whose squads were short on numbers, Reading have been unable to sign a player this summer as a result of a transfer embargo.

Despite that, boss Veljko Paunovic was able to make 10 changes, with no fewer than seven teenagers in his starting lineup. There were seven more youngsters on the bench, while 17 of Reading’s 18-man squad were products of the club’s academy.

So it may have not have been that surprising of a result, and even though they made making five changes themselves, the more experienced Swansea side dominated.

They went 1-0 up when Joel Latibeaudiere, a centre-back playing in an unusual right wing-back role, got highest at the far post to head Yan Dhanda’s corner into the net.

Joel Piroe, who was on his debut, could have doubled the scoreline but saw a left-foot shot kept out by Luke Southwood before his header drifted wide.

New boss Martin’s desire to keep hold possession was obvious to see as Swansea controlled the ball, though George Puscas’ free-kick did force a save from Steven Benda as Reading rallied before the break.

Southwood’s sharp save then denied Piroe a goal to remember after the Dutchman turned beautifully and beat three men on a sparkling run, but Swansea doubled went 2-0 up from the corner which followed.

Jake Bidwell was there to meet Matt Grimes’ delivery with a header which was blocked on the line, leaving Cabango to head in from point-blank range.

On the 63rd minute, Bidwell could be seen pointing to the scoreboard after a Reading fan threw the ball away instead of gifting it to the player for a throw in.

Of course by this point, it was just Reading delaying the time yet were on the losing side and would have needed a goal quick to get back in the game.

Reading played the final quarter of the game with 10 men after Nelson Abbey limped off with three subs already used, and Swansea secured a victory when Dhanda found summer signing Piroe in the box and he rolled in his first goal in English football.

Reading manager Veljko Paunovic:

“I am very proud of the effort, the mentality and character this generally – majority actually – young team with a few senior players [showed].

“I am very encouraged with their performance. They never lost composure although it was tough for us playing against a team that has much more experience.

“It was good to see the team working hard and never giving up.”

Swansea head coach Russell Martin:

“Really pleased with so much of the stuff we saw tonight. It felt like it was progress from Saturday. I said to the guys ‘no game of football is easy despite the youth of their team’. Ours wasn’t exactly very experienced or very old.

“But they made it easy for themselves in the way they played. The intensity to react when we lost the ball, their aggressiveness when we went to press – there’s so much to be pleased with, but so much to still work on.

“We’re really early on with what we want to do and what we want to be, but I’m very grateful for the players and their willingness to try to do what we’re asking them to do.”
