Sunderland have took to issue a statement on the serious medical incident outside the Stadium of Light after their win over Ipswich Town.
Emergency services were called in after an elderly fan collapsed outside the ground following the League One fixture which saw the Black Cats 2-0 victors.
The North East outfit’s stadium account tweeted after the match the clarify what had happened, with those leaving the ground given advice.

A message read: “We are currently working with the emergency services following a serious medical incident outside the stadium.
“Fans are advised that there may be traffic delays as a result and motorists are asked to avoid the area where possible.”
Emergency services later confirmed that they had performed CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) on a supporter in the aftermath of the win.
Paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after 5pm before the supporter was transported to a nearby hospital.
A further update then confirmed that he is now conscious chatting away, but at the time, the road remained closed.
A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service confirmed: “We were called at 17:03 to reports of a person collapsed at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland.
“CPR was in progress at the scene.
“We sent a specialist paramedic, a rapid response paramedic and an emergency ambulance and transported an elderly male to Sunderland Royal Hospital.”

I’ve just been in touch with Christopher Bailey and he said that it was Keith Nelson who was first on the scene and it was Keith who carried out CPR on the man. Bailey was on hand to take over compressions if needed. Well done to everyone who saved the man’s life.
