When will it end? That has been the question on the lips of many Spurs fans for some time now. Mercifully, the answer to that question is soon, as the club limbers up for their final fixture of the season on the road at Leeds United – in a game Sam Allardyce’s men simply must win to have any hope of survival.
Despite the largely calamitous campaign, Spurs themselves still have something to play for – win at Leeds and they will clinch a spot in the Europa Conference League if Aston Villa fail to beat Brighton at Villa Park. Not quite what was hoped for at the start of the season, but something, nonetheless.
However, the issue of whether Tottenham qualifies for a third-tier European competition is likely of little significance to fans assessing the latest Spurs News headlines. Far more important are the questions of who will be the next manager? will Harry Kane remain at the club?, and which players can be summoned in the transfer window to get the club back on the right track?
Ever eager to cater to the needs of punters, the bookmakers are already providing odds on potential Spurs signings, with those assessing the Best betting offers UK likely to be greeted with an array of names – ranging from the sensible to the outlandish. Here we present the five players who the bookmakers deem as most likely to be swapping their current clubs for a stint in North London over the summer.
General Betting Odds: 2/1
Spurs need a new keeper. That much is clear. The question is, who will it be? Much depends on the new managerial appointment, but currently topping the betting list is Brentford custodian David Raya. Having once again punched above their weight this season, many clubs will likely be sniffing around Brentford’s top performers and – given the well-documented issues of Ivan Toney – Spanish international Raya may be the Bees’ most saleable asset. Closing in on 150 appearances for the club, Raya has provided a solid and reliable presence between the sticks this season – something Spurs have been sadly lacking at times.
Jordan Pickford
General Betting Odds: 11/4
The likelihood of this transfer hinges on how Everton fare on the final day of the season. The Toffees are in the box seat to stay up, but do still need to beat a useful Bournemouth outfit in order to guarantee survival. Should they fail to do so, England’s number one may be one of the men looking for the exit door – particularly with the European Championships now firmly on the horizon. He will come at a premium but is now vastly experienced at this level and remains one of the better keepers in the league with his feet.
James Maddison
General Betting Odds: 7/2
Unless Leicester City are able to defy the odds on the final day, the Foxes will surely be in for a fire-sale of their top stars in the summer. For many of the same reasons which apply to Pickford, Maddison seems almost certain to be one of the first out of the door. A brilliantly creative midfield maestro at his best, he looks a good fit for this Spurs squad. Competition will however be stiff, with Champions League-bound Newcastle United amongst those reportedly interested.
James Ward-Prowse
General Betting Odds: 5/1
Whilst Leicester still have a chance, Southampton certainly don’t. Despite a disastrous campaign, the Saints do have smatterings of quality in their squad – quality which will surely be snapped up by rival clubs over the coming months. Attracting more interest than most is all-action midfielder James-Ward-Prowse. The 28-year-old England international doesn’t quite match Maddison in terms of creativity but does bring a greater element of steel, in addition to his deadly set-piece expertise.
Ollie Watkins
General Betting Odds: 7/1
Having become so integral to Unai Emery’s resurgent Aston Villa outfit, the Midlands club would surely be reluctant to lose Watkins over the summer. However, every player has their price and – depending upon how the Harry Kane issue pans out – Spurs may well be forced to act. A completely different player to the Spurs talisman, he is unlikely to quite fill his boots, but may prove a better option than the club’s most recent signing of a hard-running frontman….
