A Stockport County fan gets a player’s name tattooed on his thigh just THREE days before he suddenly signs for another club.
23 year old Callum Taylor says he has no regrets and that ‘super’ Sammy Minihan will be always be a Stockport legend to him.
The supporter from Brinnington, Stockport, was on holiday in Zante, Greece, with four mates when he decided to get his first ever tattoo, wanting it to be fun and memorable.
That was on Monday and after six successful seasons at the club, but Stockport on Thursday confirmed Rochdale-born right-back Minihan had left Edgeley Park to sign for National League outfit FC Halifax Town.
According to Callum, his Facebook page has been ‘exploding’ after he uploaded a photo of his 70 Euro tattoo on social media. He wrote: “Monday I got a tattoo in Zante of my hero SUPER SAMMY MINIHAN from Stockport County. Thursday he signs for another club – hahaha.”
The tattoo is here to stay according to Callum and plots to see if Minihan can autograph his right thigh underneath the tattoo so he can get that inked as well.
“I was dying to get my first ever tattoo,” Callum told the Manchester Evening News . “I wanted to get something that I would remember and something fun.
“I had been thinking about what to do all day. I walked into the tattoo shop and that’s when I had the idea. I wanted it to be something that I found quite funny. Sam Minihan is a legend. He has been at County for six years and he is my favourite player.
“He was a real fans’ favourite. I do not have any regrets. I have even had a conversation with him on Facebook. I posted a picture of my tattoo and tagged him into it – and got a reply off him. He said it was unreal and said to me ‘what a bloke.
“My mum was just a bit shocked and said ‘what have you done?’ But all my mates think it’s quality. I have always been a Hatters fan and Super Sammy will always be a legend.”
Announcing the move manager, Stockport manager Dave Challinor said: “Sam moves on with everyone at the club’s best wishes. Again it has been a really difficult situation for all concerned, as when players, especially those that have been part of the club’s furniture for so long, have to make a decision that the head says is the right one but the heart doesn’t feel that way, it becomes really tough.
“Sam leaves as a double champion who will always be a part of the club’s history and one of the group that took the club back to the English Football League.”
Callum, attends every Stockport match with his best mates Jamie Willis and Liam Root, said: “The transfer was rumoured a few weeks ago but we heard nothing. You don’t always believe rumours but it was a bit of a shock to see him go.
“But the tattoo will defo be staying. Sam Minihan has been here since the club started to rebuild – he adores County.”
Sam Minihan from League Two side Stockport County.
The defender began his career with Rochdale, making one senior appearance. In 2012, Minihan made 14 appearances on loan at Droylsden. In 2013, Minihan was released from Rochdale and signed for Loughborough University FC in the Midland Football League. In 2014 he captained Loughborough University to 2-0 loss against a Manchester United Youth XI.
After two years with Loughborough, Minihan made the move to the National League North side Worcester City. In his first season with the club, he was named young player of the season and playerβs player of the season.
In June 2016, the defender turned down a one-year extension with Worcester and joined Stockport County, also in the National League North. Minihan won the young player of the year award in his first season and was rewarded with a two-year contract. The defender made almost 200 appearances during his time with Stockport and played a part in their National League triumph last season.
