League Two side Stevenage took to troll Leeds United with tweets after Jesse Marsch’s side lose 2-1 at Aston Villa on Friday night.
Unai Emery was gleaming once again as his side held on to defeat Leeds with Leon Bailey and Emi Buendia goals putting Villa level on points with Chelsea.
Jesse Marsch’s side are without a win in seven games in all competitions, sitting 14th with 17 points and two points above the Premier League drop zone.
Stevenage couldn’t help but rip into Leeds, making a mockery out of them for being unable to pull off a comeback, something Boro did in the FA Cup last weekend.
It was one of the biggest cup shocks of recent times, coming in dramatic fashion as Villa became the latest Premier League side to bow out on a “magical” third-round weekend which saw a big number of top flight sides crash out early.
League Two side Stevenage produced an incredible late comeback to beat Aston Villa on Sunday, stunning their hosts with two goals in the final two minutes to reach the fourth round.
A record-equalling number of Premier League clubs, since the league formed in 1992, are now guaranteed to suffer early elimination in this season’s competition.
Eight Prem teams have already been knocked out of this year’s third round and one more top-flight elimination is certain when Liverpool and Wolves face off in their replay.
That means the most top division teams bowing out at the first hurdle since 2007-08 – the only other season to feature as many as nine sides fall since 1992.
The 2007-08 campaign was also the last in which a side from outside the Premier League reached the FA Cup final.
Stevenage netted twice in the closing stages of the game at Villa Park to produce a memorable upset against a club ranked 59 league places above them.
They are the first fourth-tier side to beat a Premier League team in an away FA Cup tie for four years, when Oldham beat Fulham.
After Aston Villa beat Leeds, Stevenage took the opportunity to taunt Leeds, writing after the game: “Villa away isn’t for everyone. 👀”
Then in another tweet, described by some fans to being a tad more strange compared to the other, Stevenage put up a picture of Dean Campbell celebrating his last minute winner at Villa.
This was in reply to a tweet from Villa asking fans to vote for man of the match against Leeds.

Unai Emery said post-match vs Leeds: “Two different halves. The first half we struggled more than we wanted to, but they had a lot of energy – pushing, pushing and a lot of duels. We needed to stay calm and try to break the first pressure to attack the spaces. We scored an amazing goal, and it was an amazing transition. But we needed our goalkeeper to save some very good actions from them.
“The second half was very different. We were speaking about fighting face-to-face in the duels, but we needed to keep the possession for longer to impose ourselves and control the game. We did amazing in the second half. We scored the second goal, had chances to score the third. They had one or two chances and they scored.
“But I think the second half was very different and our performance was better. We are playing matches and we are trying to control games with good positioning and trying not to concede a lot of chances to the opposition. But they have very good players. They tried to put the ball into our box and they had chances.
“But I am so happy for the victory and our performance because in the last match Bailey missed two very good chances and maybe we could have won the match against Wolves. Today, he scored and he has done the action in the second goal. I think it is amazing for his confidence. The speed today with the support of the team was very good.”
Marsch said: “We displayed that we were the better team but more importantly for me, it’s the best complete performance we’ve had as a team. Obviously, it’s frustrating given the fact points are at a premium right now and you look at the table and there’s stress in that situation, but if we can play like this, then I think we have something to build on.
“I’ve been edging and pushing the players to grasp more and more, and to commit to the way we want to play, to be brave in the way we want to play – and I thought we did that to the best of our ability tonight. I thought it was a really positive performance and something to build on. If we play like that more often, we will get more points.
“There’s so much to play for, we’re not even halfway through the season. There’s no panic, it’s just really trying to kick-start the way that we want to play. If we do that, we have enough quality and intelligence to achieve our goals. This was a big positive for me. I would take more losses and good performances because it can help really push us forward to be the team we want to be. A big positive.”
