Steven Gerrard gives savage response to Michael Owen’s return to Liverpool question

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard gives a savage response to Michael Owen’s return to Liverpool question on Saturday afternoon.

Stevie G made his much-publicised return to Anfield, watching his side get beat 1-0 by Jurgen Klopp’s side by the narrowest of margins with Mohamed Salah netting him penalty.

The result would have left Gerrard disappointing though, in what has been a fine start to his tenure as Villa boss, after winning three of his first four games in charge.

The legend did his usual post-match interviews, and things got comical when talking Michael Owen who was in the BT Sport studio.

Steven Gerrard Burns Michael Owen After Return To Liverpool Question

Owen recalled back to the time that he used to hate going back to Anfield as an opposing player to which Gerrard brilliantly replied: “If I played for Man U I’d hate coming back too!”

That produced huge amounts of laughter from Owen and another Liverpool legend in Robbie Fowler, who was asking Gerrard majority of the post-match interview questions.

Owen made the shock move to Manchester United in 2009 on a free transfer, after his contract at Newcastle United expired.

He scored 17 goals in 52 appearances in his three seasons at Old Trafford, with arguably his finest moment coming in the form of a dramatic stoppage-minute winner against Manchester City.

He won his only Premier League title winners’ medal at the end of his second season at the Red Devils, and he also netted in United’s 2-1 win over Aston Villa in the 2010 League Cup Final.

Gerrard now turns his focus onto the away game at Norwich City on Tuesday night, ahead of a game against Burnley back at Villa Park on Saturday.

Villa now sit 12th in the table with 19 points from 16 games heading further into this busy festive period of fixtures.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp: “For 75 minutes we were outstanding. Then we go 1-0 up and the game opens up, let’s say it like this. They changed a little bit but we changed too much. We lose our rhythm and when you lose your rhythm in a game it is hard to get it back.”

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard: “The plan was to stay in the game for as long as we could. The idea was to get to 60 or 70 minutes and then throw things at them when the crowd got nervous and it opened up. The penalty changed that. I thought we were unfortunate.”
