Steve Evans makes brilliant gesture to Rotherham fans, but only if they can complete challenge

Steve Evans makes a brilliant gesture to Rotherham fans, but only if they can complete a challenge set out to them.

Pre-season is well underway, his side played out a 7-0 win over Northern Counties East League Premier Division newcomers Parkgate last weekend, and now they have travelled up to Scotland for training camp.

In the meantime, season ticket sales are going well, by the 8th of July, they hit the 6,500 figure, but Millers fans have been challenged to try and hit 7,000 by the 10th of August, and look on course to do so.

If they do so, manager Steve Evans says he’ll do what Viktor Johansson done earlier this year in setting money aside so it can be used by fans in the bar, but also aims to go one further.

Evans said to the Rotherham Advertiser: “I love our supporters. It would be my pleasure to reward them.

“What Viktor did was magnificent/ It was his way of saying ‘thank you’ to fans for the backing they had given him during his time here.

“It set me thinking along the same lines because those same Millers followers have shown me a similar level of support.

“So, can I set them a challenge: reach 7,000 and I will beat Viktor’s ‘love you’ message with more cash for more beers.”

He added: “The quality of the people who follow this club never ceases to amaze me.

“I feel humbled that so many of them want to be part of the journey we’re now on. The backing I have received from them since I came back has been astounding.

“Stopping in the town for fuel can take me 25 minutes or so because so many supporters come up to me to wish me well. We will do everything we can to give them what they deserve.

“I’d also like to thank the chairman and the board for their support in my work.”

The club said on a statement on the season ticket sales earlier this month: “With excitement building ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, Rotherham United are delighted to reveal that we have surpassed the number of Season Ticket sales from the 2021/22 campaign, our last season in Sky Bet League One.

“With double-promotion-winning duo Steve Evans and Paul Raynor back at the helm and with 10 players already signed ahead of the new campaign, demand for Season Tickets has remained high and has already passed a major milestone.

“As of 9am on Thursday 4th July, the club have sold 6,423 Season Tickets, a figure which has already exceeded the figure of 6,040 from the last time the Millers were playing third tier football.

“Last term, the club sold 7,181 Season Tickets – a record for AESSEAL New York Stadium – with figures set to be high once more for what we’re hoping will be an exciting campaign.

“The club would like to wholeheartedly thank everyone who has purchased a 2024/25 Season Ticket and would like to take the opportunity to remind those who would still like to join us that they remain on sale.”

“Despite the cost of living – and our operational costs – continuing to rise across the board, we are pleased to confirm that we have kept prices frozen for Season and Match Tickets from the 2023/24 campaign.

“The only difference in our pricing structure for 2024/25 will be the slight alteration of matchday prices for supporters in the Under 8s category which has gone up by £1 – from £4 to £5.

“We hope that our determination to keep prices affordable for our supporters reaffirms our commitment to our supporters and evidences our understanding of how the current financial landscape is affecting people in the town and beyond.”
