Steve Evans gets emotional after Rotherham’s first away win in 693 days with Sam Nombe scoring against Cambridge in the 92nd minute.
Evans got all tearful while thankful to the supporters and also reflected on his career and his family. He also took a moment to take in the celebrations coming from the away end.
Garry Monk, who was ‘desperate’ to give U’s fans ‘something to cheer about’ after suffering defeat to Lincoln, saw his winless run stretch 17 matches (spanning two seasons, 184 days) and ended up getting sent off at the end of the game.
The Millers hadn’t won on the road since November the 8th, 2022, Matt Taylor in charge of them back then, a 1-0 win against Paul Heckingbottom’s Sheffield United.
🗣️ “I’ve never had a run like this in my career. I need my motivators at times. I need my wife I love her so much, I need my girls. It means so much.”

Steve Evans said after the game, per Yorkshire Post: “Even at 0-0 you think are they going to turn and is it going to be a little bit against us but they stuck with it and they were good for us.
“They’ve had journey week after week, month after month, season after season where it’s just been pulling their hair out and scratching their head.
“They’re not listening to their manager saying we’ve had a really good performance at Wycombe, a really good performance against Burton and Bristol (Rovers) and Charlton.
“On Tuesday we had a solid performance, an industrious performance. People can see the shape of the team was something to gives us industry and fight and spirit and effort and good pace in wide areas. I think in spells we had that but not enough in good areas.”
“I suffer more than anyone,” Evans to the BBC. “I’ve never had a run like this in my career, I don’t think.
“But you know what I do? I fight, I get in the trenches but I need my motivators at times – I need my Tony Stewart (Rotherham chairman) and my Richard (Stewart, vice-chairman), I need my wife and I certainly need my girls and my grandkids.
“I went into the dressing room and the Evans were having a party on the family chat. It just means so much, I love them all.
“You can’t pick your family but if I could have done I’d have picked my girls, my mum and dad are not here now but I’d have picked them.
“Players will tell you there’s been no harsh words, no harsh meetings. My task is to get this football club winning at League One level, which it’s got a terrific history of doing but there’s also been issues along the way as Warney (predecessor Paul Warne) and myself have found out.”
“I don’t think it was our best performance since the start of the season by a long stretch,” said Evans of Tuesday’s victory.
“The game seemed to be drifting towards 0-0 and then Cameron Dawson produces an unbelievable save. I’d turned away, I think it’s in the net.
“Again, we had lots of final entries into the box but a little bit of a lack of quality.
“We put a great ball into the box and I don’t know if Sam gets a touch or not but all it didn’t matter who got the touch.
“We got the win. It’s nearly two years.
“There’s a lot I could say about those two years but I wasn’t here so I’m going to refrain from saying it. My chairman sometimes says, and he’s a wise man, something not said says lots.
“There’s a simple word – shambolic.
“But we have to go again (on) Saturday. We’re three points away from the top half of the table, that’s a great incentive.”

Twitter users gave their thoughts as Steve Evans gets emotional after Rotherham’s first away win in 693 days…
@The_RUFC: Can’t help but love his passion and emotion. Folk can question his team selection and his formation and his tactics, but I must say I’ve been quite surprised and disappointed by the lack of respect shown to a bloke who has done a lot of good for this club.
@Zee80Thompson: Stay humble Steve Evans. Last night game was dire. We got lucky with the goal. From now on, don’t just talk the talk, walk the walk . Show it to the fans that you are going to keep us up in the league. I’m rooting for ya & the lads . OK bye. UTM #rufc
@MollyShep: Calm down Steve, it’s Cambridge away lad in the last minute after a shocking performance 😅
@CraigyBoyBes: Loads of work to do, absolutely awful tonight but you’ve got to love someone who breaks down crying after winning a football match. He’s off his nut. Been a crap start to the season but let’s hope tonight kick starts our season #rufc
@ButlerAndy: Conveniently forgetting the utter car crash of a season he presided over @bostonunited in 2006/07 that led to EFL relegation. He should be nowhere near football at any level.
@johnnieK88: I’m actually warming to this bloke… Knocks Villa out the FA cup with Stevenage, gets played off the park by #BCFC, and is full of praise for Blues. Now, he’s actually showing humility after years of being a bit of a knob. Fair play 👏
@Canadine08: Would not want anyone else in charge of our team after the last 2 gaffers. Look what it means to the man. Let’s get behind them UTM!
@Owen__Connell: Great interview, stick with him and stick with the club and let’s get to where we know we can!
@Rufcjoe87: Love this emotion. He cares as much as we do. Stick with him and we’ll come good. #rufc
@Nick_Steel_RUFC: You can’t deny our football club means a lot to Steve. I hope we kick on now and start playing how we know we can 🔴⚪️
@smith98_josh: Honestly get behind him! It’s not been great as of yet, but he’s one of us and he knows what it means. Unlike those last 2 chancers. It’ll come good, praying this kickstarts us. Glad he’s said tonight wasn’t good enough. Fuck all those who want him to fail. Steve Evans’ red army.
@craigthemiller: This is what it means we didn’t have that with Richardson and Taylor! Abit of passion and fight #rufc we go again Saturday and you answer us fans again with 3 points!! Let’s get behind them and get New York rocking but it starts from the first minute with a battling performance
@benwwfc7: Didn’t need to tell us that first sentence on the tweet Steve. We already knew
@Hannn_95x: Hope he can prove everyone wrong including me going forwards from today… we shall see
@MightyMillers20: Got a little emotional there did the big man, I think he’s felt the pressure massively these past few weeks and today was probably make or break for him, we go again Saturday let’s get behind the lads and get a run going
@sparklydiamond: Not seen emotion like that since Paul Warne spoke about his dog. It’s clear how much he cares and how much Rotherham means to him, let’s hope it’s all positive from here on in 🤞🏻
