Statement released after Colchester fans make disturbing chants at Leyton Orient

A statement has been released after Colchester United fans make disturbing chants at Leyton Orient on Saturday afternoon.

Some of the away end could be heard singing chants about ex-Leyton Orient boss Justin Edinburgh, who sadly died of a cardiac arrest at the age of 49 in June 2019.

Those who sang the chants have received widespread criticism with the CUSA saying they will revoke the membership of any of their members found to have been involved, during the 2-2 draw in League Two.

Colchester United said in a tweet: “Not for the first time this season a very small minority of those in the away section have acted in a shameful manner.

“This time making vile chants that no decent person would make and are in no way shared by Colchester United or the vast majority of Colchester United fans.

“We will co-operate with Leyton Orient should there be any further investigations.”

The CUSA Supporters said: “Needless to say that if it is established that any of our members were involved with the deplorable chanting at Orient yesterday, they will be members no longer.

“Sincerest apologies to the Edinburgh family on behalf of the minority of our distasteful ‘fans’ 😔”

The Blue White Army (BWA) Colchester fans group (@BWA_ColUtd) added: “On behalf of all decent @ColU_Official fans we have made a £50.00 donation towards the Justin Edinburgh Foundation.

“We hope this makes a small amends for the deplorable chants by a section of our fanbase today.

“Up the O’s and Up the U’s! 🔴⚪️ 🤝 🔵⚪️”

The game itself was an extraordinary one, with Colchester making a stunning late comeback to draw 2-2 at League Two leaders Leyton Orient.

Although the hosts were ahead with goals from George Moncur and Ruel Sotiriou, the hosts were unable to hold on to their lead.

The struggling visitors somehow scored twice in the final three minutes through Connor Hall and Noah Chilvers to snatch a draw.

This is what social media users said with a statement released after Colchester fans make disturbing chants at Leyton Orient…

@OrientFanTV: Wonder how Mr Embleton feels today being associated with a club like yours

@_ryjms: “Not for the first time”. You lot should be opening investigations so it doesn’t happen again. Embarrassing from you

@Pandamonium1881: Whilst at least there has been a statement and most professional clubs wouldn’t say much more at this stage, it is IMHO poor that it has taken this long to condemn such behavior and it also appears to try and play down the issue with wording such as a “very small minority”

@sears11GOAT: Goes without saying the chants were completely unacceptable and disgusting, but it’s a shame it seems the Orient fans are blaming the whole fan base despite it being a very small fraction #ColU #LOFC

@cgibson_89: Absolute wronguns. Should be banned for life.

@ColU_Robs: Same little kids every week who can’t handle their drink. Same idiots that were vandalising the toilets before the game. Go and support someone else #colu

@Jamie_Hudson_: Can only apologise for that. Was ashamed when I heard that. Other fans said the same thing. Vast majority of fans did not join in with that horrible chant.

@lormat59: That is absolutely unforgivable. Should be ashamed of themselves

@The_Mark_Morris: I’m so embarrassed and ashamed to be a #colu I moved away from this section of fans and it ruined a good game & result for us.I’m truly sorry a section of fans have let us down in this disgraceful way.

@Clachan1GK: I couldn’t believe this sick and vile Chant was being sung today i sincerely apologize for some of our fans because they have let the club down massively today and it ruined the game as well when it shows of been a nice day out for everyone.

@SebCain: Surely not? I hope Ross Embleton resigns after that

@TheLatestColU: Agree with this, disgraceful behaviour. Does not represent the majority of U’s supporters whatsoever

@david_hampshire: Was right next to a kid who had a bottle thrown at them. Never seen so many kids screaming to start a fight. Pretty grim and pathetically controlled by the stewards.

@CalumWelfare: Massive Colchester fan here, can we please stop saying it’s the small minority! Our fans are a disgrace and we need to act more like Southend and start to be a more professional club!

@John_GR63: Honestly one of the main reason I don’t go to big away games since I’d be associated with them given I’m young as well. Ruins what should be great days

@Colchesterviews: Not quite sure what imbeciles were following #Colchester United today, but on behalf of sensible #ColU fans, I’d like to apologise to #LOFC and their supporters. The chants aren’t acceptable at anytime, it’s not banter, you’ve embarrassed the club today. A great result tarnished

@NathanRef96: Probably same idiots that went to Ipswich away too and caused damage ! Now we’ve got orient fans slamming the whole fan base when it’s just a idiotic minority who don’t even support the club unless it’s a local game ! Any true fan is ashamed at those chants

@OliverMorley8: Is so weird because this season we seem to have attracted all the twats… is disappointing hopefully justified punishment can be dished out

@E10__mess: How disrespectful of @ColU_Official fans singing morbid chants about Justin Edinburgh, makes me sick how low some within can bases can stoop so low. How would you like it if someone mocked one of your dead relatives? Needs investigating @leytonorientfc @EFL

@colufangeorge: Disgusting songs sung by #colu fans today about Justin Edinburgh. Can only apologise to #lofc fans and others at the club. A minority of U’s supporters I’m sure but disgraceful none the less
