Statement issued after Swansea City officials receive unacceptable abuse and ‘death threats’

A statement has been issued after Swansea City officials receive unacceptable abuse and ‘death threats’ over perceived failings at the club.

Those associated with the management of Swansea City have reportedly received death threats due to perceived shortcomings within the club, according to the Swansea City Supporters Trust.

The Supporters Trust recommends for an immediate fans’ forum and also condemned the “unacceptable” nature of the abuse directed at the club’s officials.

The letter comes days after the Swans fell to 17th in the Championship, having secured only one point from their last five matches, the last result being a 5-1 defeat away at Norwich.

Swansea City Supporters’ Trust @swanstrust said in their letter: The past few weeks have been incredibly challenging for fans and everyone associated with the club.

Poor results, lacklustre performances and speculation surrounding approaches for our head coach and more recently our captain have had a demoralising effect, particularly among supporters.

Fans are also rightly concerned that we are headed for another disappointing end to the transfer window and what knock-on effect that may have on our status as a Championship club.

In short, those of us who passionately follow the club are understandably becoming increasingly frustrated, concerned and discouraged by recent events.

Club Chairman Andy Coleman and the new ownership group have stressed their commitment to repairing the bond between the club and the fans, emphasising transparency and open dialogue as central to that process.

In our dealings with Andy Coleman and the wider board, we have no doubt that they genuinely believe in these principles.

However, despite our repeated calls for a Fans Forum over the past few months, we have been left disappointed by the lack of progress.

As an organisation, we wholeheartedly believe that all fans should be given the opportunity to regularly hold decision-makers to account and scrutinise the strategy implemented by the board.

That’s why we have again urged the club to fulfil their responsibility to supporters by confirming a date for a Fans Forum – ideally as soon as possible after the end of the current transfer window that closes next Monday 3rd February.

Going forward, we are calling on the club to commit to holding at least two Fans Forums every season, with those dates agreed at the start of the season and honoured without fail.

Without this, many fans will justifiably conclude that the club only believes in openness and transparency when the results are going our way.

If Swansea City is to be successful, we need more open communication, a clearer strategy and a willingness to provide transparency when we need it most. That way we can perhaps begin to feel that the club and the fans are once again pulling in the same direction.

In the meantime, we will continue our conversations with the club and will reveal more details about a Fans Forum when we have them.

And a final but really important few words from us for now. We are very aware of a number of personal attacks, vile insults and even death threats that have recently been directed towards many people involved with Swansea City, including their families.

We accept and understand that scrutiny and criticism come with whatever roles we play to try and make Swansea City FC something we can all be proud of. Passions are obviously running high at present and sometimes we may not get it right.

But to hear and receive some of what has come into the club and the Trust over the past few days is unacceptable, will not be tolerated and has absolutely no place in society.

The fixture between Norwich and Swansea at Carrow Road on Saturday saw a Josh Sargent double, Lewis Dobbin, Ante Crnac and Emiliano Marcondes steer the Canaries to a 5-1 thrashing.

Norwich’s Johannes Hoff Thorup per Sky Sports:

“Josh is a quality striker and we have obviously missed him – you could see what a difference he made today.

“He is a big voice in the dressing room and a big player on the pitch. They were two quality finishes and he also showed how good he is running behind defenders and finding space.

“It’s great to have him back but we have to careful with him after a long spell out – it was 65 minutes maximum for him today whatever happened.”

Swansea’s Luke Williams per Sky Sports:

“I thought we were marginally the better side in the first half but then we concede a goal at a dreadful time and go in behind.

“Then after we equalise they score almost immediately, another dreadful time to concede.

“After that the will to compete seemed to leave the players and it was a terrible end to the game for us. We collapsed and it was unacceptable – I just feel sorry for the fans who made the long journey today – they must be sick of the sight of me right now.

“It has been a poor run of results and it’s important we bounce back quickly because we are looking over our shoulders at the teams below us now.”

Twitter users gave their reaction on a statement issued after Swansea City officials receive unacceptable abuse and ‘death threats’…

@Jack049: ….and now, a response is required from the club…

@lgkeogh: You lot aren’t worth a cold cup of piss unfortunately, time to stop riding the gravy train!!

@JBTEvans: The death threats thing is terrible. It’s a sports club. Some people neee to get a grip.

@curtisjr28: Being part of a generation that has only seen success, it’s hard not to feel that the club has been slowly dismantled by the Americans. Having had a season ticket for 19yrs I’m struggling to persuade myself to renew if this is the continued direction that the owners are taking.

@harryhpalmer: Hopefully anyone threatening anybody associated with the club feels the long arm of the law. Whatever people’s opinions are on the mismanagement of the club, violence and threat of violence has no place.

@JonAylwinJones: If they had regular engagement with the fans, a lot of this resentment wouldn’t build up. At least we could understand the position as opposed to guessing what’s going on.

@jacks_are: Not sure how productive a soon fans forum would be in all honesty. Think it’ll just add to the toxicity instead of helping heal it

@mb107614739: Good to see them call out the club. Broken promises from our chairman. Lost the fan’s support now

@chrisrue3: Surely the @swanstrust can see that fans are feeling like we did under petty, very much worried that we are going down to league 1. We are a small club but for our captain to say 4 weeks ago he wants to stay here and now wants to leave. we in a mess @SwansOfficial need to speak

@PhilRichards82: Say what you like about the Trust, but anyone sending death threats are a stain on the club. Fuck sake pull yourselves together.

@akroberts7: Has it not occurred to you that you’re being being played? Nothing has changed

@MarkEdw81354280: The fact that he is not being responsive to your requests show just how little regard he has for the Trust and by proxy the fans. Get your head out of the sand and show some fight and courage.

@CJRichards21: A whole lot of absolutely nothing this statement is. Can’t say I’m surprised 🤦🏻‍♂️

@4horsemen1975: And another important point to make after all this crap they have the cheek to stop early bird season ticket prices knowing dam well we could be heading for relegation. Been a season ticket holder for 25 years and now this soI’ve asked for refund along with a few others
