Spennymoor Town wave goodbye to their first team managers after FA Cup exit

Spennymoor Town wave goodbye to their first team managers after suffering an earlier than hoped FA Cup exit at the weekend.

The Moors, who sit 13th in the National League North with 11 points from 8 games, were knocked out of the tournament when Clitheroe won 2-0 on Saturday.

The pair were appointed in late-December last year and ended the 2021/22 season in 10th with 60 points from 42 games played.

Club legend Jason Ainsley is to take interim charge.

CLUB STATEMENT

Spennymoor Town can confirm that First Team Managers Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley have now left the Club by mutual consent.

Also departing from The Brewery Field are First Team Coach Steve Halford and Goalkeeper Coach Martin Campbell, following discussions held on Monday.

Club Ambassador Jason Ainsley has been installed as Interim Manager and he will be supported by James Curtis, Chris Mason and Jamie Chandler.

The Club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Anthony, Bernard, Steve and Martin for the hard work they put in during their time with us and wish them every success in the future.

Anthony Johnson wrote via Twitter: “I feel brand new. Good morning 😊

“It’s 100% the right decision for both parties.

“We always wanted to step out of our comfort zone and test ourselves away from home, working with players we’d never worked with before.

“I’ll miss everyone – it’s a fantastic club with really authentic people.

“All the very best ❤️

“And now the dust has settled I’d like to congratulate an amazing effort from all at @ClitheroeFC – You were all fantastic on Saturday and I wish you all the very best of luck in the next round.

“Well done 🔵”

Fans reacted as Spennymoor Town wave goodbye to their first team managers after their FA Cup exit on Saturday…

@dannewell190: Gutted.

@mark86spooner: 🥳🥳🥳

@ThinfordMoors: 👋👋👋👋

@dickol1976: Seems an overreaction unless they have lost the dressing room. Interesting one for Spenny.

@Darlo_Robbo: Wouldn’t be the first to lose the dressing room. Sounds like player power again.

@durhamchris1983: Good. Both useless & arrogant. Couldn’t handle any sort of criticism. Good luck with the next appointment.

@dannewell190: Can’t say I agree with this. Both always came into the bar after the game and took on constructive criticism. All 4 drove up on Sunday for a charity game despite already knowing they were leaving. The least arrogant people I’ve ever met.

@EthanFranks15: Doesn’t sit right with me this. One bad week and not given a proper chance to react. Rash.

@PaulGC84: 8 games in and just 3 points off the playoffs. Very early days and a bit rash, surely? 🤷🏻‍♂️ The season has barely started.

@AndJustice_88: Given the performance on Saturday it appears the players weren’t going to play for them anymore.

@jordandavies09: Good blokes. Very honest and approachable. A long list of successes. They’ll bounce back.

@FcBlaydon: Players need to take a long hard look at themselves.

@smatt1978: Great commitment by both @amjonno & @BernMorley84 to take it on in the first place 👏🏽👏🏽

@kevinluff: Big shout early into the season. Not badly placed in the table but perhaps somewhat indifferent form wise, the carry on when we played there and now a cup exit maybe it’s not such a surprise? Tweet from Anthony Johnson maybe suggests the distance and travelling have had a factor?

@renny_overton: These lot had won the league a few weeks ago because they were unbeaten

@JackBarker27: Shithouses

@BlythsGreenArmy: Cannot say I’m surprised – after the Darlo incident, cup exit and poor start in the league it’s probably the right call.

@Tezlad1231: Best of luck in the future 👍🏻

@DezyByers33: Absolutely gutted … 4 top genuine lads 🖤🤍🖤🤍

@ByardChristian: All the best both. Be back in the game in no time!

@Jons171: Gutted to see you go, you were let down badly by the players who just haven’t performed well enough for you, good luck at your next club

@BigAlfire80: Good luck with whatever you do next Jono, take care mate 👍

@leegreen4: You’re an honest and straight forward guy. Best of luck for the future.

@eaststandbaldie:
Teams will get beat by teams below them in the cup, teams will get hammered at Kiddy.
Look forward to see were next for you lads.
You lads will be back, that’s football.
Bury, Rochdale, Bacup? Good luck and all the best.
