Southampton fans run over to goad West Brom fans after booking Championship playoff final

Southampton fans run over to goad West Brom fans after booking a place in the Championship playoff final where they will play Leeds.

The Saints emerged victorious at St Mary’s following a goalless draw in the first leg, setting up a showdown at Wembley.

Will Smallbone put the hosts ahead on 49 minutes, then Adam Armstrong scored a brace in the second half to seal a 3-1 win to eliminate West Brom from the playoffs. It came Despite Cedric Kipre’s late consolation goal for the Baggies, meaning they will now have to contend with a third consecutive season in the second tier.

After the final whistle, Southampton fans ran onto the pitch and made their way towards the away end and taunted the West Brom fans…

Jordan Clark (BBC Radio Solent presenter): “The pitch is covered in red and white. But police are battling to keep the two sets of supporters apart. The players have been ushered off the pitch really quickly. Everyone was celebrating and it has turned unsavoury and it is a shame we are talking about that.

He added: “The stewards have formed one long line to try and get the last of the supporters to leave the pitch. The boos are from home fans who have stayed in the stands because they want to celebrate with the players. There are messages on the screens saying that anyone on the pitch will get a ban. Stewards and police have done a really good job.”

Match stewards looked to be out in numbers to deal with post-match issues on the pitch.

Messages warning supporters of punishments for pitch incursions was also been displayed on the big screens in the stadium.

Thing soon quietened down on the pitch after some unsavoury scenes among supporters.

Southampton striker Adam Armstrong speaking to Sky Sports:

“Something we’ve been working on all year is to get back to the Premier League.

“You’ve seen the fans today. These Southampton fans have been unbelievable.

“I’m proud of everyone. The way we play is not easy. You’ve seen the way we keep the ball, it’s brave. Exciting at times.

“It paid off today.

“What a win. We know West Brom are a good side over the two legs. We needed to put a marker down for the final and we’ve done that.

“We know what we are up against.

“The main thing now is Wembley. We will rest and recover… and maybe a few beers in-between that.”

Southampton manager Russell Martin speaking to Sky Sports:

“They were amazing. I’m really proud of them, I’m grateful to them.

“In the second-half, I thought they were incredible. In the first-half, they were good but a little bit tense.

“In the second-half, they freed up a bit. Some of the football they played were really amazing.

“We playing against a good team. I have so much respect for them and what they do.

“I feel we got what we deserved.

“We have to get to [the Premier League] for it mean something special. We had a brilliant night tonight. It’s all leading to the big one.

“If we can play with the same courage and intensity as we did tonight, we can give ourselves a chance.”

Southampton’s goalscoring midfielder Will Smallbone speaking to BBC Radio Solent:

“What a day. Before the game it was unbelievable.

“The lads were buzzing off it. It really spurred us on to get into the final.

“West Brom were hard to break down, but in the second half, we were definitely there.”

Southampton manager Russell Martin speaking to Sky Sports on Will Smallbone:

“When everyone is seeing his name, I feel emotional for Will because he’s so desperate to play for his club. This is his club and he’s had some tough moments in his short career so far but an amazing human being.

“Watching him grow this season has been one of the biggest privileges so far of my managerial career.

“He’s been so important for us. He’s selfless, he’s a brilliant team-mate and he’s growing in confidence.

“I think he has the capacity to be a top player.”

Southampton goalscorer Will Smallbone on BBC Radio Solent:

“It is probably one of my better goals. What a game to save it for.

“The gaffer has helped my career to kick on. What an experience.

“Now we are here, it is in touching distance.

“We will go into next Sunday with a gameplan to beat Leeds.”

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan speaking to BBC Radio WM:

“We were not the strongest [team].

“In general, I think they controlled the game how we expected that they will control it.

“But, at the same time, we couldn’t attack in the way that we should have to achieve a better result.

“We all know the positive things, but it is more about the pain that we have after the defeat.”
