Shrewsbury brutally mock Man Utd fan on Twitter; Liverpool fans unveil savage banner

Shrewsbury town brutally mock a Man Utd fan on Twitter while Liverpool fans unveil a savage banner before the game at Anfield.

It was a match to forget for Ralf Rangnick’s side with the Manchester United interim manager describing his side’s heavy Premier League defeat as “humiliating”.

Liverpool outclassed their rivals in a 4-0 victory on Tuesday to go top of the table, meaning Man Utd miss the chance to move level with fourth-placed Tottenham in the race for a Champions League place, dropping to sixth.

The trio of Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane scored the first three goals, with two of them after 22 minutes, in an comfortable performance to which United simply had no answer. Salah got the fourth in the 85th minute.

Player ratings

Liverpool Alisson (7), Alexander-Arnold (7), Matip (7), Van Dijk (7), Robertson (7), Henderson (7), Fabinho (7), Thiago (8), Salah (9), Mane (8), Diaz (8).

Subs: Jota (7), Keita (n/a), Milner (n/a).

Man Utd: De Gea (5), Wan-Bissaka (4), Lindelof (3), Maguire (3), Dalot (4), Jones (4), Pogba (n/a), Matic (4), Elanga (6), Fernandes (4), Rashford (4).

Subs: Lingard (5), Sancho (6), Hannibal (n/a).

Man of the match: Mohamed Salah.

For Man U fans, it was tough to watch. One supporter took his frustration out on social media, tweeting: “We are looking like @shrewsweb at Anfield.”

However, he was probably not expecting a reply so quick that would make him look even more stupid when the Shrewsbury Twitter admin replied: “We scored at Anfield this season. You didn’t. Levels.”

“It’s embarrassing, it’s disappointing, maybe even humiliating,” Rangnick said.

“It’s embarrassing, it’s disappointing, maybe even humiliating,” Rangnick said.

“Especially in the first half, we were just not up to it. We were nowhere.

“We could have had a back line of six or seven, if you don’t try to win second balls first, not even to speak of first balls… we were second best in all relevant areas of the first half and that is just not good enough.

“They [Liverpool] just showed what kind of calibre they are. We are not up for it. We are not good enough to get points in a game against Liverpool.”

Asked how United can close the gap to Liverpool, he added: “We have to accept they are six years ahead of us now.

“When Jurgen Klopp came they changed at the club and lifted not just the team but the club and city to a new level. That is what needs to happen with us in the next transfer windows.

“There will be a rebuild for sure, that was obvious in the first three or four weeks for me. For us it is extremely embarrassing as a coaching staff to sit here and have a press conference like this. We just have to admit they are better than us.”

Rangnick added: “If you analyse the situation it is not difficult… for me, it is clear there will be six, seven, eight, maybe 10 new players. Before you sign those players you need to be aware how you want to play.”

“The fans don’t deserve us to play this way,” United midfielder Bruno Fernandes told Sky Sports. “They deserve more from us. The way they stay and applaud us, they deserve more. We have to raise our level higher.

“Liverpool is ready for the title, we are not. I don’t need to be here saying about the difference of the level.

“We have to look at ourselves from top to bottom and understand what is going wrong. We are competing until the end. Nobody can put down and think it is over. We have something to fight for.”

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said: “I don’t expect us for 95 minutes to be completely in charge of the game, I think we were for 70 minutes. They changed at half-time the formation, so their high press was different. Our first decision was passing the ball in and around the six-yard box which ended up with a corner for them.

“First half we were really in charge of the game and you wish of course we pick up from there, but it’s a 15-minute break and we needed 10 to 15 minutes more to be ourselves again. We controlled the game again, scored wonderful goals and won the game.

“I thought our counter-press was second to none, it was unbelievable how we won the ball back. With the speed and desire the boys showed tonight that’s how we scored the first goal. A really good game and wonderful goals, everybody is happy.”

Liverpool fans even rubbed it in towards visiting Manchester United supporters before the game, with a banner unfurled at Anfield.

Liverpool fans were eager to remind their rivals of just how far ahead they are with a banner reading “Imagine being us”, telling United they could only dream of being in Liverpool’s position.

The home fans could even be heard chanting “who the fuck are Man United” minutes before half time, when they were two goals up. W
