Sheffield Wednesday have points deduction halved

Sheffield Wednesday are lifted off the bottom of the Championship table after their points deduction is now halved.

The Owls have gone from twelve points deducted to just six for breaching EFL spending rules, after the club were said to have included the sale of their Hillsborough stadium in their 2017-18 accounts despite the ground being sold a year later.

The revised punishment, set by an arbitration panel on Wednesday, will see their current Championship total reduced to five and lifts them off the foot of the table.

CLUB STATEMENT

In August 2020 the Club filed an appeal to a League Arbitration Panel against the decision of the EFL Disciplinary Commission to impose a sanction on the Club of a deduction of 12 points in season 2020/21.

The Club confirms that today its appeal was upheld in part. The decision of the League Arbitration Panel is that the sanction is reduced to a deduction of 6 points in season 2020/21.

The Club is digesting the content of the decision and will not provide further comment until it is published.

EFL STATEMENT

The EFL notes the decision taken by an Independent League Arbitration panel in respect of Sheffield Wednesday’s appeal against the findings of an Independent Disciplinary Commission in July 2020.

The Club was charged with breaching the league’s Profitability and Sustainability rules in November 2019 and found guilty, based on the fact that the Club should not have included profits from the sale of Hillsborough Stadium in the Club’s financial statements for the period ending July 2018.

The independent panel has today rejected the Club’s appeal related to matters surrounding the stadium sale and on consideration of the sanction; they did not agree with the Club’s assertion that a points deduction should not have been imposed. However, they did opt to reduce the sporting punishment from 12 points to six, which will be effective immediately.

Barry Bannan’s penalty sealed victory for the Owls after Steve Cook was sent off for high flyers Bournemouth on Tuesday night.

Sheffield Wednesday’s Garry Monk: “I thought we were excellent from start to finish and got exactly what we deserved. I’m happy for all those players, the staff and the fans. No-one expected us to win tonight but it’s funny how football works.

“We had a terrible week last week and quite rightly people begin to doubt you. It shows you how quick things can change. It’s a good marker and a good answer to what was a terrible week last week. We had everything tonight. It was a complete performance, with a result as well.”

Bournemouth’s Jason Tindall: “It’s really disappointing. I felt there was one team fighting for their lives tonight and there was another team that turned up and thought that their ability would be good enough to win the game.

“I think that’s the lesson we’ve got to learn from tonight. We’ve got to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
