Sheffield Wednesday fans walk out in 67th minute at 4-1 down before Watford go on to win 6-2

Sheffield Wednesday fans walk out in 67th minute at 4-1 down before opponents Watford go on to win 6-2 in quite the dramatic game.

What a day for the Hornets, a big win to move up to fifth. Vakoun Bayo was the star as his quadruple sees Tom Cleverley’s side end their run of six successive away defeats in emphatic fashion.

It’s the first time Watford have scored six goals in an away league game since doing so at Leeds in November 2012.

Sheffield Wednesday: Beadle, Palmer, Iorfa (M Lowe 73), Bernard, Johnson, Valery, S Charles (Valentin 66), Bannan, Gassama (J Lowe 66), Windass (Musaba 73), Smith (Ugbo 73)

Watford: Bachmann; Porteous (Ebosele 59), Sierralta, Pollock, Larouci; Ince (Keben 88), Dwomoh (Louza 78), Kayembe, Chakvetadze, Baah (Sema 78); Bayo (Jebbison 88). Subs: Bond, Vata, Tikvic, Doumbia

Watford boss Tom Cleverley told BBC Radio Three Counties:

“We showed a real personality to compete through not such a good first half performance and then showed our class in the second half.

“I’m really pleased for (Vakoun) Bayo with his four goals because he does an amazing job for the team.

“The away form has not been as shocking as it has looked on paper before today, we just had three poor performances.

“We were absolutely fantastic in the second half and I’m happy that five of the goals went in at the end our supporters were in. They’ve got another long trip on Tuesday (at Swansea) and hopefully we can back it up.”

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl told BBC Radio Sheffield: “It’s a big disappointment. After the first half, I never thought we would lose this game. We controlled the first 45 minutes in all phases and came back fantastically after we conceded the first goal.

“But it’s not about 45 minutes it’s about 90 minutes. It was horrible to watch the five goals we conceded in the second half. That is not the way I want to see my team.

“It’s hard to see two faces during the game. One was how we want to play with power and energy and pressing moments where we carried the ball and in the second half…I cannot accept the second half.

“We didn’t work and didn’t cover after the two penalties. And then we conceded two goals at the second post – I cannot accept this today.”

Here’s how Twitter users reacted as Sheffield Wednesday fans walk out in the 67th minute at 4-1 down before Watford go on to win 6-2…

@Real_SWFC_Media: I’m 6 – 2 the stomach of this 😭

@nwp1997: Have you ever seen a more mentally weak team? Time and time again do their heads drop against any adversity and they get battered. They’ll shit themselves again next Sunday and it will be embarrassing #swfc

@DanJamesHaywood: Fucking madness, just play the ball over the top and you’ll beat us, it’s that easy.

@nanjayman: Well, dodgy ref or not (worst I’ve seen for a while), I don’t know what was said at halftime but we were absolutely wank. We made a bad Watford side look good. It’s pretty much nailed on if anyone’s having a bad run they’ll end it against us. We’re our own worst enemy at times.

@PeterTravis7: Time to give young Charles a run out in the goal

@tommyuto: Close game lads

@Justablade17: Better than cooper they said 😂

@YBG_Willabobs: Embarrassing performance at home today. Should never be losing like that at home regardless who we are playing let alone a side that had scored once in the last 4 away games. With the derby around the corner a serious talk needed for Danny and the players. Not good enough. #swfc

@Jordrl66: Real bizarre game. Actually thought first half from a tactical POV was one of best we’ve played. Press was all wrong 2nd half and punished by making same mistakes. Set pieces are still a disaster, throws ins especially.. Really do have to bounce back on Tuesday but 🫣 #swfc

@0736card: Can we ever get a game where the team play for the full 90? First half was poor last 10 good. Second half shocking. Get that we won’t win them all but playing with no desire or passion is unacceptable #SWFC

@nattasswfc: I’ve come to the conclusion that it doesn’t matter whether we have Danny Röhl as manager, Darren Moore, Pep Guardiola or Mike Bassett, we’ll just always be shite #swfc

@Belliee_92:
Disgusting performance
Disgraceful officiating
Absolutely pile of shit all around
#Swfc

@tommyuto: Ngl 6 goals from 6 shots on target. Just Championship football init. Bizarre. Felt the game deserved a draw but we just lost our heads after two disgusting decisions. Make amends on Tuesday Danny.

@Wawaw2002: I dont care who the manager is and what he’s done for us. That CAN. NOT. happen next week. If it does he must leave immediately otherwise it’ll just spiral out of control, and the club will be in chaos again, and he’ll destroy whatever reputation he has #swfc

@WTIDPOD:
We’ve had big defeats before under Röhl. Ipswich. Southampton. Millwall. Huddersfield.
We’ve bounced back from those defeats each time.
We’ve now got to do the same again.
#SWFC • #WAWAW

@LetchworthOwl: Total second half capitulation…down to every player out there – noticeably a couple completely downed tools by the end…#swfc

@benordmorris: Think it might take more than a chinese to erase the memory of that 2nd 45 minutes #swfc

@TheWednesdayOwl: Any idiot blaming the ref for that fucking embarrassing and gutless performance needs to get their head checked. #swfc

@mickenell: Getting a bit tired of opposition teams battering us more than we batter them. No wonder our goal difference is terrible. We’ve got to be much more stubborn than this when we don’t play well. #swfc

@Craig_18_G: Not as though I’m Christopher columbo or owt. But wasn’t there a money issue on Thursday. Not been paid lads……….As I hope to god, that’s the only reason for this fucking shit show #swfc

@TomMatthews_: Can’t compete with the money that’s about in this division nowadays shame we spaffed what little money we had up the wall … just treading water until the supreme leader sells up #swfc
