Gaz the Sheffield Wednesday fan produces one of the best radio phone-ins you’ll ever hear, and everyone should be more like him.
He made the call to BBC Sheffield’s Football Heaven show on Saturday evening just after the Owls’ 2-0 defeat at home to Burnley.
And he’s got a point, with many fans on social media in agreement, the clip doing the rounds online. What do you think?
📞 “Just have a Chinese”

He’s got a point (and some egg foo young, probably). What do you think? #SWFC | @BBCSheffield pic.twitter.com/ekTRtTeh3e

He said: “People get I don’t know if it’s faux outrage that, like, with last, I’m gonna be very angry. I walked out and just said to love to walk in. Have a good night. I’m gonna have a Chinese, and I’m gonna watch a bit of telly.
“And I don’t feel too down about it because we turned over West Brom and Coventry when we probably didn’t think we would.
“And I think in this league, it froze up results where some weeks you’re gonna get one, some weeks you’re not, and we’ve not got one.
“And a lot of people, if you’d have said today, would you take a draw out against Burnley? I probably would have.
“But I’m looking at Swansea, Tuesday night where that’s one where I’m hoping we get a result from.
“But I just think people are crackers. I don’t know. I don’t even know how to put it into into, like, an eloquent, conversation to yourself on radio where people can think, I won’t do that again.
“But just don’t be mental. Just be nice. Barry Bannan’s not crap, and Michael Smith’s not gutless.
“You know, like, they just we’ve just had an off day. We’ve lost. We move on.
“When, I think, some people genuinely think we were gonna be like title contenders. It was never gonna be case because we ain’t got that kind of bonds to push us forward.
“And, Ugbo he’s becoming slowly but surely. You can hear it creeping in. He’s becoming the new boo boy, and he put a shift in today. It’s not happening for him, but he’ll score.
“Chill out. Everybody needs to chill out and just and just relax, Rob. And just enjoy being with your family and friends. And have a Chinese or an Indian, whatever you fancy. And don’t get too tied up in it all. Because life’s fine.
“I used to leave Wednesday and I used to think I hope we’re home for Gladiators. That’s all I had in my mind, you know. And but now social media is turning people absolutely mental. They can’t let it go. They finished match, the scrolling, ‘ oh Bannan’s been crap’.
“Bannan, what what what well, I’ve got 3 teenagers in here. They don’t think you were crap.
“So what are people seeing? Do you know what I mean? We haven’t come out, and we’re all devastated. I wish we’d have won, but let’s not be mental. I mean, we’re looking forward to Tuesday.
“Let’s keep a bit of perspective. Let’s all just be happy. Let’s eat. Let’s have Chinese.”
Here’s how Twitter users reacted as Gaz the Sheffield Wednesday fan produces one of the best radio phone-ins you’ll ever hear…
@HistoryPegg: Gaz nailed it. There are far more important things in the world than the result of a football match. Don’t get too high don’t get too low. Chill relax and have a Chinese
@george_barber01: He’s spot on. I went back to the pub at 85 minutes and had a pint. I’d seen enough. But I wasn’t mad. I was over it. It’s a game of football. Burnley will finish above us. We will finish below Burnley. They’re a good side.
@jfagej: Been following Weds for over 45 years. I now try and enjoy the whole of match day win lose or draw. The Championship is still the best league to be in . After all I cannot do anything about the result so no point getting too upset. As they say there’s always the next game.🥡🥢🧧
@ste_s79: Plot twist: Chinese was shut on the way home and he went mental.
@Dadders: 100%
@bazapeps: Without wanting to sound awful a lot of our fans aren’t the brightest, struggle to see the bigger picture, judge a performance based on a result and feel a need to be over exaggerating to all wins and defeats
@murray1867: Brilliant and so true
@rmctom380: Gaz is spot on. Yes I am Wednesday follower and yes I hope we win and get stronger but crying out loud there are far worse things going on in this world than Ike Ugbo not scoring or Smudge missing a chance. We are probably a middle order team who might beat a few top clubs.
@jack231997: Agree with this. I love football and when Wednesday win/lose it can effect your weekend but there are much bigger things. We will be more than fine this season, try and stay positive, it’s not like we’re getting battered every week. Have some perspective
@SwfcOnTop: Spot on. Social media genuinely makes people go mental after every loss, we played a top side and if not for conceding two sloppy goals would of got a good point. Keep the faith 🦉 #swfc #WAWAW
@tigersammy: The sooner people realize the result is the least important part of a gameday, the happier you’ll be. It’s all about a good game, good friends / family, good eats and drinks and most importantly, getting home safely 💕
@callyowl: Agree with him
@easthulltiger66: One of the Best calls to a Radio Phone in ever, sums it up perfectly #hcafc
@SteelCityLewis1: Love it 🤣🤣 couldn’t have said it any better myself. Lost a game to a better team and that’s all there is to it, onto the next one
@NatSufc99: Fully agree, football fans are laughably fickle but especially as a fan of a team in as competitive a league as the championship nuance and perspective are everything.
@bennomartin83: Love this @GazRobinson1 let’s have some perspective and Chinese 🤣
@PughMarkpugh26: I went in the Chinese, but just had a battered sausage 👍
@b4bardsley: Absolute quality Gaz 👍
@NeilWardley: 100% apart from the Chinese bit.
@__Jordz: Couldn’t put it any better. Social media just got football fans crying over a loss it’s embarrassing 😂
@DaniBryan89: Good call & bang on. Same at United, ive said this for years, we win & we’re labelled “best side on planet” lose and its meltdown..
@winghalf6: I’d like to shake this man’s hand. Talking sense is such a rarity
@blades_sufc_1: Can’t argue with this we are all guilty of it! Facebook and ‘X’ have ruined everything! World was a better place without them!
@ROldfieldDesign: Gaz is bang on. Fanbase gets carried away far too easily. Just have a Chinese 😂😂 #swfc
@Hank83416250473: I used to give a shit, it ruined my weekend, mood dictated by football. It’s took me a long time to realise that footballers don’t give a shit which makes me the same. It’s a game, #swfc
@shane1191: Excellent perspective this, disappointing against Burnley I thought we were well in the game but you can’t win them all. Swansea is a good game to bounce back. It’s a long season that we are literally only 3 months into and I feel there will be a lot more better results to come
