Sheffield Wednesday fail to pay players; wages for March with fans venting more anger on owner Dejphon Chansiri.
A statement issued on Monday night said it is due to a cashflow issues stemming from debts owed.
The club said it was a “temporary issue” due to debts owed to Chansiri, a 56-year-old Thai businessman, whose family control the Thai Union Group, the world’s largest producer of canned tuna.
The Owls, who currently sit 12th in the Championship, five points off the play-offs, described the issue as “temporary” and stated that Chansiri is working to resolve it quickly.
Chansiri’s tenure has been marked by financial difficulties, including selling Hillsborough stadium to himself for £60m in 2019 to comply with spending rules, asking fans for £2m in 2023 to cover debts and wages, and an EFL embargo in November over unpaid HMRC amounts.
His management has drawn fan protests and strained relations with manager Danny Rohl.
Dejphon Chansiri is not an appropriate person to own Sheffield Wednesday. He’s consistently got into rows with supporters, misled people and played fast and loose with the club’s financial health. They deserve stability, not chaos. pic.twitter.com/WdMLVguKx6

CLUB STATEMENT:
Sheffield Wednesday can confirm a temporary issue with the payment of player salaries for the month of March.
This has occurred as a result of significant sums of money owed to the chairman’s businesses which has in turn impacted on the club’s immediate cashflow.
The chairman is working hard to resolve this situation at the earliest possible opportunity and in the meantime thanks everyone for their patience and understanding.
– STATEMENT ENDS –
Rob Staton (BBC Radio Sheffield reporter), said in analysis: A growing number of fans are angry and demanding answers after it emerged that, not for the first time during Chansiri’s reign as Sheffield Wednesday owner, the Owls players have not been paid on time.
Many are asking why the club sells season tickets in an early-bird window before Christmas yet by March, there isn’t enough money to even pay wages?
A statement claims it’s down to “significant sums of money” being owed to Chansiri’s other businesses, “impacting immediate cashflow”.
However, you get the sense patience for a lot of people has run out.
The club was placed under a second registration embargo in 12 months by the EFL last November over amounts owed to HM Revenue and Customs. Now this.
How financially sustainable is this club? What exactly is the future of Sheffield Wednesday? These are questions that need to be answered with more than just a statement. Fans are worried and some will feel embarrassed. They deserve answers.
This latest admittance will lead to growing calls for Chansiri to sell the club.
The Owls might be five points off the play-offs but they lack the solid base that typically accompanies teams challenging for the top flight. Fans dream of a Premier League return after 25 years but it’s not realistic in this environment. The club is a long way off in terms of infrastructure and finances.
It’s the latest reason why a talented young manager in Danny Rohl, the club’s greatest asset, may leave amid reported interest from elsewhere.
The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust said: The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust has expressed its extreme disappointment over tonight’s announcement regarding delayed player salaries.
Chair Ian Bennett commented that: ‘We are very concerned once again about the financial instability affecting the club and the implications it may have on its operations and reputation. The Trust wants to see full transparency and accountability in addressing these issues.
We urge the chairman to resolve the situation immediately to ensure the payment of the players and staff, as is their contractual right.
This development will understandably have left fans feeling uneasy about the club’s immediate future.
Fans were already saying enough is enough. We just can’t go on like this’.
“Dejphon Chansiri, the supporters of Sheffield Wednesday have had enough. We are drawing a line.”
Sheffield Wednesday fail to pay players with fans venting more anger on owner Dejphon Chansiri…
@DaiYonggeout: This should be a massive red flag to the @EFL but let’s be honest they don’t care. Unfortunately I think Wednesday could be the next us! To many teams going through the shit by the end of the week we might be booted out the league. #chansiriout
@homer23: And still people defend Chansiri 🙄 Jesus just sell us already
@jhensman1993: How anyone honestly can defend him is beyond me. He is destroying the club from the inside out. And I don’t by this rubbish of him loving the club because if he did, he would hold his hands up and say time to move on and let someone else with the financial backing take us forward
@FTM1042: Chansiri is one of the worst chairman’s in football history. Has no shame & is totally classless. Certainly has no heart or care about the supporters. Sheffield Wednesday be in a more healthier place in my opinion when Chansiri sells up
@markfrost79: Basic commitments, unfulfilled. Get that club sold #EnoughIsEnough #swfc
@chappers1867: “It’s not the right time”, “doom mongers”, “he means the best”
@Mhball74: Just get him gone, we’ve had enough of this clown now
@Swfcfan1982: It’s just unacceptable. If money isn’t an issue (DC’s words at the fans forum), then why is money an issue? #swfc How does he pick who to pay and who not when at the end of the day they are employees of his business?
@col12099381: I said a few weeks ago that chansiri was now totally skint. Some didn’t believe me & got a bit shouty. Chansiri has 2 options open to him in the next few weeks, administration or sell up. #swfc #EnoughIsEnough
@benswfc15: Stop this Chansiri ‘decent bloke’ ‘but he means well’ narrative. He’s a fucking joke who has consistently ripped off fans, lied to us and treated us like shit. “Do you own a business?” “Sell your house.” He doesn’t give a shit about us, never has and never will 👍🏻 #swfc
@cjdecorators: As a manager or player why the hell would you want to stay at a club where you don’t know if you’re going to be paid at the end of the month. A complete joke of a chairman. Do us all a favour and sell up
@stoney_s6: Sell up and get the sen fucked off DC, absolute disgrace of an owner, time after time you fuck the club over, absolute shambolic club owner
@Hank83416250473: Stop buying tickets, stop going, stop buying merchandise, you want him out. Prove it, it’s the only way #swfc
@_KieranPearce: Will sing your not fit to wear the shirt when players are shit so where’s the your not fit to run the club chants when the owners isn’t fit to own it. Sell up you fucking c*nt.
@clurrrrxhx: Just do us all a favour and fuck off now DC, if you’re still backing him you’re part of the problem too. Enough is enough #swfc
@cjowls: Anyone who still thinks Chansiri is good for our club is as deluded as he is the man’s got no idea he’s running our club into ground it’s one thing after another making us a laughing stock and turning a club with loads of potential into a club no one wants to touch #swfc
@_lvkezx: Just baffled why any player would want to play under a owner where you don’t know if you’re gonna get paid for the month before, get out the club you big donkey, not the owners fault though as some people say ? #swfc
@Justom29: Danny going, wages not being paid, agening squad with contracts running out, potential 3 window transfer ban. And some fans had the audacity to say I’m talking rubbish when stating we could be in a relegation battle next season. 🤯 #swfc
*Sigh*
We stand with #SWFC fans who recognise the need for change with ownership unable to be the right custodians for football clubs after this highly unsurprising turn of events. https://t.co/Zy1rENMmGx pic.twitter.com/4g1qfGPNjr

Chansiri’s excuse for not paying the bills is that his businesses are owed money.
After the first time that happened he should have transferred at least 3 months operating funds into the club’s accounts, in case it happened again.
He didn’t. So he’s lying.#EnoughIsEnough

It’s actually really fucking sad this you know…
He’ll still not give up and give in.
We’ll ping from embargo to drama to statement to lies.
He’s struggling so we’re struggling.
Where do we go?
I feel for the players and staff #swfc
