Sheffield Wednesday amuse fans as they come up with new way to announce signing of player

Sheffield Wednesday amuse fans as they come up with new way to announce signing of a player, with Ike Ugbo permanently joining the Owls.

News of the 25 year old forward’s return to the club from French side Troyes for an undisclosed fee came during a live pre-match press conference.

He spent part of last season on loan with the Owls, netting seven times in 19 appearances, with six of his goals in five games across February and March under boss Danny Rohl to help avoid relegation following a woeful start to the 2023/24 Championship season.

The club said in a statement via their official website: “Wednesday have completed the permanent signing of Iké Ugbo for an undisclosed fee from French side Troyes.

“The hugely popular forward returns to S6 after spending the second half of 2023/24 on loan at Hillsborough, in a prolific spell that yielded seven key goals in 19 games to help the Owls seal a dramatic Championship survival.

“Ugbo began his career with Premier League Chelsea and, following a variety of loan stints, the striker enjoyed permanent ventures in Belgium and France.

“The Canadian international becomes Danny Röhl’s 10th signing of the summer transfer window, joining before our 2024/25 campaign kicks off against Plymouth on Sunday.

“Welcome back, Iké!”

Interviewer: How has this summer been for you?

Iké: It’s been good. It’s been a very long one. Had to be very patient. I enjoyed it.

Interviewer: Seems like it was quite a competition for your signature as well. What’s it like for a player when you know there’s multiple teams chasing you? You don’t perhaps know where you’re going to end up. And ultimately, why was Sheffield Wednesday the right club for you?

Iké: I think there’s a lot of factors that came into it. Coming back to Sheffield, I was really looking for a home somewhere I can cool home, you know? And after how I finished the season, it was always, my mind was always made up, really, in a way. But of course, there’s going to be some offers coming here and there. But I think I had my mind, my mind made up already.

Interviewer: What is it about Wednesday, this club, this manager that works for you?

Iké: I don’t know what I would say exactly, but with me and the manager, I think he gave me a lot of trust last season. He was patient with me at the start. He knew what I can bring to the team and I think I repaid his faith in just the performances I gave on a consistent basis, especially with the goals as well.

Interviewer: A lot of the players at Wednesday have spoken about the impact that Danny Rohl has had on them. How would you describe the impact he’s had on you?

Iké: Definitely a big one because he really brought the best in me. I think there’s a lot more to come now and I’m looking forward to working with him and the staff to get me to that next level.

Interviewer: You’re 26 next month. Do you feel like you’re coming into your prime?

Iké: I don’t know. I don’t know. I would say so. Hopefully. Hopefully by the end of the season I’ll see aim for having. I’m going to aim to have a better season than last season and just push on from there.

Interviewer: What has this journey been like for you, maybe to reach in this stage in your career? Because everybody’s careers are different, aren’t they? You know, not everybody Just lands at 18, ends up playing Premier League football and doing all of those things. So what’s this journey been like for you up to now?

Iké: There’s a lot of ups and downs. It’s been a tough one. I went alone quite early, experienced first team football when I was 18, and I feel like I’ve gained a lot of experience being at so many different clubs, countries. I think that’s what got me to the stage I’m at now and I think I’ve brought that into my game now.

Interviewer: Is that something that really you feel you’ve benefited from that opportunity? You’ve played lower league football, you’ve played in Holland, you’ve played in Belgium, you’ve played in France. You know, you’ve had all of these experiences. You’re still at a young age and now, like you say, you’re putting down those roots at Sheffield Wednesday and trying to reach the next step in your career.

Iké: Yeah, no, I think that adds a lot to my game. I think, especially when coming last season, mid season, I have to adapt to Danny’s tactics, to what the team is demanding from me. And I think putting in good performances early, those is very key as well. So I think that’s helped me a lot for that.

Interviewer: Have you been following Sheffield Wednesday summer? Because they’ve obviously got a lot done. A lot of players have come back, they’ve signed new players. Have you been keeping half an eye on what’s been going on here?

Iké: Yeah, of course. I’ve been watching. I watched the last game, Liam’s testimonial, and you can see the team is really playing well and I’m looking forward to joining back with them and playing games, definitely back at the home stadium.

Interviewer: Do you have a favourite goal that you scored for Sheffield Wednesday last season?

Iké: Honestly, I would say probably the one against West Brom. I don’t know. There was something. I think it was more the noise after the goal that really set it off and how important that game was for us. So definitely that one.

Interviewer: And how could this move help you with your international ambitions? Because there’s the small matter of a World Cup coming up for Canada in the near future.

Iké: Yeah, I think it would be good for me now that I’ve shown what I can do here and now, working with the same coach, the same team, I build a foundation of what I can bring to the game and bring to teams. Now, this is just about outperforming what I did last season.

Interviewer: What are the hopes for Sheffield Wednesday? Because there seems to be this real optimism and maybe a new expectation at this club, which hasn’t been here for a few years Iké since Wednesday, we competed in the playoffs 2016-2017. So are the players buying into that? Are you sort of looking at this and thinking the way you finished last season, something a bit special could happen this year?

Iké: I think everyone’s looking to have a positive season. I think it’s going to be a tough season, as always. But I think with the coach that we have now, we don’t need to limit ourselves. I think anything is possible at this point.

Interviewer: And finally, the fans. I think pretty much every other sentence that the fans have uttered to any sort of local journalist over the last six weeks has mentioned Ike Ugbo. So how much does it mean to you? So the fans have been desperate to see you come back. They’ll be absolutely delighted by the news today that you have re signed for Sheffield Wednesday. What does that kind of mean to you?

Iké: It means a lot to me, honestly. From where I’ve come from, I’ve never felt so much love from a club. And now I’m Just ready to give everything back to the club and give him goals and good performances and wins for the team.
