Sheffield United’s Chris Basham rushed to hospital after suffering horrific leg injury

Sheffield United’s Chris Basham rushed to hospital after suffering horrific leg injury in the Premier League game against Fulham.

The 35 year old Blades captain sustained an apparent break to his standing leg after he attempted to make a cross during the first half and immediately fell to the ground.

The game at Craven Cottage was stopped for over 10 minutes to allow medics to treat the defender with several physios also seen surrounding the stricken centre back as players from both teams appeared visibly shaken by the scenes.

Basham had been carried off the pitch on a stretcher while given a standing ovation from everyone in the stadium, to which he responded by waving to the crowd and gave a thumbs up.

He was put into an ambulance and then quickly seen leaving the ground just moments later with the full extent of the likely break not yet been confirmed but Basham, who will now undergo tests at hospital, is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Sheffield United tweeted: ‘A stoppage in play as medics attend to a serious injury to Chris Basham.

‘Jack Robinson replaces Chris Basham who leaves Craven Cottage on a stretcher following a lengthy stoppage in play.

‘We send our best wishes to Bash, and will communicate updates as and when we have them.’

Fulham also said: ‘We’ve had a lengthy stoppage following a really nasty injury for Chris Basham, who will be stretchered off the pitch.

‘We’re all sending you our best wishes, Chris.’

Andy Stevenson (BBC TV presenter and commentator at Craven Cottage): “Sending all best wishes to Chris Basham. The Fulham fans were incredibly respectful.

“So many of the spectators and players in that corner had their hands over their faces as Basham went down.

“Paul Heckingbottom even came right across the pitch to Basham as he received treatment.”

Michael Dawson on Soccer Saturday: “It looks a really bad injury. It’s an injury to the lower leg. The medics are just trying to make Basham as comfortable as they can.”

The game itself saw, well, quite the second half with all four goals coming after the break with Decordova-Reid getting the first.

Then Sheffield United found a leveller in controversial circumstances with Diop pulling up injured when on the ball. The visitors hit back on the attack and Robinson shinned the ball into his own net.

However, Fulham got lucky when Cairney’s mis-hit shot hit the crossbar and came off the back of goalkeeper Foderingham and into the net.

Willian then sealed all three points in injury time with a shot Foderingham should have done better with.

Sheffield United stay winless after eight games played.

Paul Heckingbottom said post-match: “He’s where he needs to be, in hospital with the doctors and the medical team. No-one wants to see that, ever, and when you’re involved in it, and it’s one of your players, it’s far far worse.

“I’ve been on a pitch with a teammate and involved when it’s someone else but when it’s one of your players it’s tough and you can see that with the players. No [diagnosis] but you guys have seen the pictures, it’s terrible, it’s horrific.

“I don’t know what the next step will be, but he’s where he needs to be and that’s the most important thing. Everyone could see he needs to be in hospital. We’ve lost a good player, had to made changes we didn’t want to change. We can’t blame that. It’s going to affect us but it’s going to affect us for the season.”
