Sheffield United sack Ruben Selles after three months in charge with Chris Wilder set for a third stint in charge. Yes, really!
Selles was appointed on June 18th with a three-year deal, but the Blades currently sit bottom of the Championship with five losses and one goal scored, and also exited the Carabao Cup early.
Last season, under Wilder, the team reached the Championship play-off final but lost to Sunderland. Despite earning 90 points, they missed automatic promotion.
American owners COH Sports sacked Wilder weeks after the play-off defeat and brought in Selles, previously sacked by Hull City after narrowly avoiding relegation.
But now Selles has been dismissed by Sheffield United with announcement on Wilder’s return is expected within 24 hours.
Alan Nixon did report that Tony Mowbray was one of the candidates to replace Ruben Selles, with Mowbray likely take the job and is a big admirer on the Blades board. Danny Rohl and Chris Wilder were also of interest.

Selles out. Wilder back? Makes sense. Should never have been pushed out in the first place. #SUFC

Talk of an over-arching appointment between Wilder & board. Could work depending on who & being mutually agreeable. CW’s always taken overall responsibility as “manager” literally. Be surprised if Alan Knill &/or Matt Prestridge don’t return with him. #SUFC

It comes after a 5-0 loss to Ipswich Town, marking their sixth consecutive defeat under current manager Ruben Selles the club’s worst in the second tier for 30 years.
The COH Sports ownership group, was present at the match according to Sheffield Star, and have lost their patience with Selles.
The club is also said to be contemplating appointing a technical director or director of football above the manager.
Sheffield Star said it’s unclear if Wilder would return as manager or in a new role, while Sky Sports say he is expected to be reappointed.
“It doesn’t matter what I believe but I will keep working until the last moment,” Selles said when asked about his future.
“I have to take the pain and analyse what we want for the next game to try to beat the next opponent. In the first half we saw the team we want to be – we put them under pressure and won some balls. The first goal comes from an interception 70 yards from our goal. The second goal changed the game and I think we fell apart.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Sheffield United sack Ruben Selles after three months in charge with Chris Wilder set for a third stint in charge…
@AlexanderTM25: I whole heartedly believe that we have royally fucked it. The fact he lasted this long has almost certainly cost us the chance of promotion. You don’t start the season by dropping 15pts and still get an auto spot. Playoffs is our best (realistic) hope now. #twitterblades
@TheVanBlade: Have to remember the board were split on Wilder sacking, assuming Rosen was pro Wilder so there is no animosity there and those who weren’t have stepped away. A bad decision handled even worse but we move on hopefully stronger off the field long term for it. #twitterblades
@ValleyFloydFred: Couldn’t wait until Charlton came to Bramall Lane could you? Absolute fuckers. #twitterblades #sufc
@FPL_ElStatto: Wilder returning for the 3rd time. Seems odd to go back to him again. Safe appointment yes, but surely you sacked him in the summer for a reason!?? #theblades #SUFC
@Fonzyy97: Worst appointment ever? Certainly up there. The atmosphere next weekend will be an all timer ⚔️❤️
@weststeve563: Happy fucking Sunday our season starts Saturday we’ve given the league a head start time to watch us go now..!! YOU BLADES ⚔️
@KMblade1984:
And now you’re gonna believe us
And now you’re gonna believe us
And now you’re gonna belieeeeeve us
THE GAFFERS COMING HOME

@harrypdean: Wilder is such a mug, supporter or not. If that’s how they treated me and asked me to come back 4 months later, I know what answer they’d be getting. He’s a good manager, wouldn’t be short of options elsewhere
@Alexstone93: Ruben Selles cemented as Uniteds worst ever manager in our lifetime/ ever. Absolute fraud. Glad SUFC leadership are eating humble pie, expect a strong statement and/or interview as to their vision if they go back to wilder or another. #SUFC
@deaksofficial: Takes some bollocks to go crawling back to Wilder after sacking him. Fair enough. Let’s move on, unite and move forwards. #sufc
@Chris_Wriiight: Sheffield United may have the stupidest owners ever, do you know how silly you have to be to sack a manager that got 90 points for a man who struggled to keep a team up? However, Wilder is the biggest mug in all of this for going back, will be sacked when they don’t go up #sufc
@Shovell96: To sack Wilder after losing in the playoff final after coming 3rd despite a points deduction, to then then bring him back in after the new guy loses his first 5 games is some bit of business 😂
Chris Wilder is set to be given the Sheffield United job for the THIRD time.
Following Ruben Selles’ disaster, the club have turned back to Chris Wilder again.
He has been paid off here twice with the sack and is now likely to get his best contract yet at the club.
