“Shameful from David Sullivan” – Fans on social media react as David Moyes reveals the truth about his West Ham departure.
The ex-Hammers manager has revealed that he was offered a new contract by the club following a Premier League win against Arsenal at the Emirates on the 28th of December.
However, after West Ham suffered a three-game losing streak, the contract offer was withdrawn by the club’s chairman, David Sullivan.
Moyes mentioned that he hadn’t signed the contract initially as he was unsure about committing to it at the time.
Moyes’ tenure at West Ham, which included notable successes like winning the Europa Conference League in 2023, ended when his contract expired at the conclusion of the 2023/24 season.
Despite the contract offer being withdrawn, Moyes maintained a professional stance, suggesting that there was an understanding to revisit the decision at the end of the season.
This incident underscores the often precarious nature of football management contracts, where performance can rapidly influence decisions regarding managerial tenure.

Appearing on the Stick To Football podcast, Moyes said: “We [West Ham] beat Arsenal on December 28, we beat them at The Emirates, and that day they offered me a new contract.
“Then we lost three games in a row. I hadn’t signed the contract because, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure if I should stay. I wasn’t quite sure.
“The contract wasn’t a great contract, but the biggest part of it was he (David Sullivan) withdrew the contract. He said ‘well I’m taking the contract away’.
“So he withdrew the contract, just on the back of the results. And we said ‘look, let’s wait and we’ll make a decision at the end of the season.’”
Neville replied: “I don’t think you can do that. I feel uncomfortable. If you offer someone a contract it is a bond.”
Harri Burton of WestHamZone said: “David Sullivan is often a figure at West Ham who splits opinion among those at the London Stadium.
“The Hammers owner was praised for the number of new additions during the summer transfer window, with Julen Lopetegui being backed in the market.
“However, all of that hard work, if not already undone by the new manager, has been thrown away after David Moyes’ latest reveal about his exit from the managerial role this summer.
“It was well known that the Scot had a new contract on the table during the 2023/24 campaign, and while the Hammers were majorly struggling in the Premier League, there were mixed opinions about whether he should stay.
“The main issue was the uncertainty over the managerial role moving forward, and now Moyes has dropped the bombshell that Sullivan actually took the contract offer away from him.
“Some fans will argue that the decision was warranted after a poor string of results, overseeing a loss to Bristol City in the FA Cup, thrashings by Manchester United and Arsenal and being held to a draw by Sheffield United.
“However, if Sullivan chooses to offer the manager a new contract, he should stick to his guns and keep faith in him rather than feed him to the pack of dogs waiting outside the London Stadium.
“Fans were frustrated by the unknowingness of who was going to be the manager ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, and rightly so, but it was clearly unfair to blame Moyes, who had all power taken away from him.
“While the end of Moyes’ tenure ended on a sour note, he brought so much to the football club after returning for a second stint, even helping lift a European trophy for the first time in decades.
“They even finished in a top-seven spot, which helped the Hammers qualify for Europe, eventually leading to the journey to Prague and creating history for the East London side.
“It seemed that the club were ready to go in a new direction, and part ways with the manager, but Sullivan clearly went the wrong way about it and Moyes should be praised for his respectful and mature response whenever talking about West Ham.”
“Shameful from David Sullivan” – As mentioned, fans react as David Moyes reveals the truth about his West Ham departure….
@WestHamViews09: Like Moyes or not… Sullivan is and will always be a cnt.
@Irishlfc57: David Sullivan deserves to have to witness the pure shite Loputegi has West Ham playing in that case, dropped Moysey over a bad 3 game run? Embarrassing that, what’s the excuse with Loputegi then? Whose had 1 decent result since signing vs United & even still that was flukey
@gizzi_m: It remains the correct decision. But the whole process of getting there – from letting him go into his final year without a decision, to offering and then withdrawing the new contract – not so correct
@WHUFC_News: Whether you wanted him to go or not, this is embarrassing and a truly disgusting way to treat someone that did so much for the club. David Sullivan in a nutshell.
@td67coyi: Yet moyes was saying in March and April that there was a contract for him to sign!!! Dont trust any of them to tell the truth
@td67coyi: Not sure I believe moyes but I also dont trust sullivan to not do it. Moyes needed to go but sullivan should just give up.
@SockedKiwi: That’s shocking behaviour.
@RobWaldon: I agreed with the likes of Simon Jordan at the time who were stating we needed a clearer picture of the situation & this had an effect on results & fans mind sets. If that contract was signed in December I bet results would have improved & January would have been different.
@JackH_1906: Typical Sullivan. Did the same with Allardyce and the players naturally clocked off. Terrible bloke
@whufcalg: Sullivan’s such a prick aint he
@TheLawless: While I still think we needed a change this shows Sullivan hasn’t got a clue. To offer someone a deal off the back of 1 game & then withdraw it after 3. This sort of behavior is why we miss out on top managers & players. He’s the real dithering Dave.
@mikecawston: Moyes leaving was the right decision. But this cluster fuck from Sullivan over the contract situation shows just how much the club is held back by him. #whufc
@The_BoleynBoys: David Sullivan is and always will be the problem with West Ham. #GSBOUT
@conor_200333: I wanted him out but what a disgraceful human being Sullivan is
@gamblingdiary2: Shock 😆😆 Offered him peanuts, withdrew the contract, obvs gave him no money in jan to spend as it was put aside for the new manager fucking up the rest of our season
@29morg: And this is how the board treat the manager they had the strongest relationship with, we dont have a chance lol
@ChessyHour: This is nasty work.
@LukeTurnerEsq: Moyes always seems like a decent human, jammy grumble mag turned property merchant David Sullivan, less so. West Ham are never going anywhere while he’s the owner sadly.
@whujxck: It’s embarrassing how we’re run as a club, past few years under Moyes hid that well but ultimately we’re never going to get the change that supporters want to see until there’s a takeover/massive change at board level
@danm16476: Absolutely embarrassing from West Ham. We are run like a circus no wonder why we won’t even move to that next level.
@JordanSainz: Regardless of what you think of David Moyes. This from Sullivan stinks. Fully expected from a poisonous little twat like him though. Club will always be rotten while he’s at the top
@ReformJake: Sullivan throwing managers under the bus AGAIN. Who knew?
@WHU_Will_: Honestly, just get rid of the parasites that own our club out. Sullivan and Brady – fuck off
@DanJames9121: Sullivan is a complete twat
