Shaftesbury complete signing of ex-EFL striker who scored 50 goals in 2022/23 season

Shaftesbury complete the signing of ex-EFL striker Brett Pitman who scored 50 goals for AFC Portchester in the 2022/23 season.

Despite making headlines across the country for his outstanding form, the 35-year-old ended up missing out on promotion with AFC Portchester.

They had been leaders for majority of the season, but ended up finishing in fourth place on 94 points after 38 games played. AFC Stoneham were third with 95, Bemerton came second with 95, but the champions were Horndean, with 98 points, scoring 126 goals and conceded just 21.

But now it seems Brett Pitman will come up against his old club next season, with Shaftesbury, who finished 13th with 36 points.

They said in a tweet: “WOW!! Brett Pitman signs!

“You don’t need us to tell you his numbers, Brett is a prolific goalscorer in every league he has played in.

“We are SUPER excited to get this one over the line and look forward to welcoming Brett to the squad.”

He is among a number of impressive signings for the ambitious club so far this summer, with Poole midfielder Luke Holmes, centre-backs Ash Wells and Thiago Caze da Silva, Cam Beard, Ollie Mayo, Cam McMonagle, Lee Francis and goalkeeper Shane Murphy among others linking up.

Portchester boss Dave Carter said on Pitman, as per Portsmouth The News: ‘We didn’t really know what we were getting when we signed Brett, we took a gamble.

‘He hadn’t really got in the side (on loan from Bristol Rovers) at Eastleigh last season, we didn’t know how fit he was – we didn’t even know how old he was!

‘He doesn’t do any tracking back – we’ve got other players to do that. The whole team is built around Brett, and it’s working – but it’s not all about him.’

In November 2022, Pitman said on his goalscoring, via The Sun: “I’m playing for a great team at the moment and that really helps.

“We have got good players all over the pitch and it’s not just me that has been scoring goals.

“I expected to score a lot of goals when I moved to Portchester, I still feel pretty fit.

“I know what I’m good at now and I’ve got the experience to know where I should be on the pitch.

“Compared to when I was playing in the top flights of football, it is pretty easy to score goals.

“I don’t want to get too carried away, Haaland is playing in the Premier League and I’m not.”
