Sean Dyche goes on a VAR rant over the decision to disallow Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goal in the 2-1 defeat at Tottenham on Saturday.
Richarlison and Heung-Min Son gave Spurs a 2-0 lead by the 18th minute; before Andre Gomes’ goal on 82 minutes.
The result means Spurs go fourth in the Premier League table, while Everton are 16th.
Speaking after the game, Dyche showed just how unhappy he was at the goal ruled out for an Andre Gomes foul on Emerson Royal in the build up.
The score at the time was at 2-0 in the 51st minute, with Gomes said to have gone through the back of Emerson to win the ball, but with little contact.
The goal would have halved the deficit, and Dyche knows all to well at how much that decision has his side.

Sean Dyche said, as per the club website: “I try to give a fair view – I thought we were outstanding. There were two soft moments for their goals – we’ll hold our hands up to that – and we are normally more alive in the circumstances – but, even before that, we started on the front foot, we created chances, we looked a threat on the ball, we were working hard tactically without the ball.
“At 18 minutes when they score their second goal, I can’t believe what I’m seeing. From then, even before, I thought we were absolutely outstanding. You talk about pride in performances and in yourself. It sounds weird because we lost today but that’s as close as I’ve been to total pride. I thought it was an outstanding performance.
“There has to be a future in what you’re doing and I think that’s clear now. It’s not a guarantee but the intent in these players is clear. From our fans, I’m looking at saying, ‘That’s players who are giving a lot for our shirt’. That’s one of the things I promised. I said we’ll have a team that will give everything. That’s up there for me.
“It’s easy to talk about winning games. What about when you don’t and you take pride in your performances? I think that’s outstanding today.
“It is a head-scratcher. It was a moment with VAR [for Calvert-Lewin’s disallowed goal]. The feeling in front of our fans who travel incredibly again. Look, we are locking something in. Of course, we have to keep doing it but there has to be a future in what we are doing and there is here.”
Interviewer: “Does the fact that we went 2-0 down early on but still come back to nearly win the game underline the growing mentality in your squad?”
Dyche replied: “There’s an underlying feeling in our camp and with our fans as well. I need to make it clear that does not guarantee you win every game you play but it doesn’t half give you a better chance. I’ve been in the game a long time: when you have a connectivity like that on the pitch and the connection with your fans, it’s more aligned and everyone knows where they stand. That’s how we’re beginning to look, and then you add in some more of the quality today, the work ethic. I’m not going to start with individuals because there was that many who played well.
Interviewer: “Your thoughts on Dominic’s disallowed goal, overturned by VAR?”
Dyche: “Yes, there contact but, we all know, you look at that screen so many times, you are going to see contact with virtually everything. I can’t believe it. The referee, who is very experienced, has a great view from the reverse angle, the linesperson has an amazing view – the best view from the front angle – they let play go on, then all of a sudden VAR intervenes.
“If you trust the referee’s instinct, because what would be the point if we don’t? – and I’m a big fan of VAR – you have to ask who is refereeing who? If it’s clear and obvious, the referee looked at it six to eight times so it can’t be that clear and obvious.”
Interviewer: “Does the Evertonians’ reaction at the end sum up the performance?”
Dyche: “I’ve commended the fans so many times. Travelling today, especially around Christmas, it’s expensive for everyone and all the costs that go with it. They’re here again in massive numbers. We didn’t reward them with three points but I think they know we have a group of people who are wearing the shirt with pride and that’s an important factor.”

When questioned if VAR had helped out his side, Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou said: “Why would it help us out? It was a foul.
“It didn’t help us out. I don’t like VAR. That’s part of the problem, people use that kind of terminology, that it helps or it goes against.
“It’s a tool, it’s used, I still don’t like it. Did it help us? I don’t know if it helped us. If that goal stood, we might have scored a third. That’s the beauty of football.
“I’ve already said I don’t like the way VAR is being used, I didn’t like the way it was used today. I thought it was a foul, yeah, but the referee missed it and probably missed another foul as well. That’s part of the game.”
This is how fans reacted as Sean Dyche goes on a VAR rant over the decision to disallow Calvert-Lewin’s goal at Tottenham…
@MarcSpurs: What part of the ball did Gomes play? None, wasn’t even close to the ball, knee into Emerson’s knee, foot kicks through Emerson’s foot.. Sarr was blocking the refs view, not sure what lino was looking at, it’s a foul no question. EVE didn’t take their chances, same as us v AV/WHU
@Superspurs131: Well no, that is exactly what VAR is for… The ref missed a clear foul so the VAR official told the ref you better go take a look at that… So he did and then made the correct decision.. A rare example of VAR working flawlessly….
@rich_chandler: I get what Dyche is saying but in this instance VAR did it’s job. There was a foul in the build up, if the ref didn’t deem it a foul then questions should be asked of the ref not VAR because it was clearly a foul on Royal.
@Ash_Howard: I kinda get what he’s saying but, on the other hand, it is a clear and obvious error.
@BluDazza17: The @FA_PGMOL seriously need to be held to account. They make questionable decisions every week with impunity & clubs are suffering as a result. The #Greedy6 are given clear & obvious biased decisions & the rest are treated with contempt. #PremierLeagueCorrupt @premierleague
@Lea_EFC: There’s no need for match officials if VAR decides that might be a foul. As soon as the referee goes to the TV to review the decision, it’s getting changed. The games being referred from a studio in Stockley Park.
@Jaywortho: No point having refs or linesman in my eyes
@JosephWalsh8: This man talks the most sense out of any manager in my lifetime. Trust in Dyche 💙
@shelleyj89: Why is he liked so much? It was such a clear foul. Utterly pathetic to complain about it.
@Harry_Sherlock: The decision is an indictment of the on-field referee. It’s obviously a foul. Blow the whistle!
@Dan23_92: Dyche complaining about VAR after their game over a decision that was right is the kind of thing that really doesn’t help. It’s a clear foul in the buildup to Calvert-Lewin’s disallowed goal and his logic seems to be because the ref and linesman didn’t give it it should stand.
@chriscurleyman: We have 5 refs now. It’s ridiculous. VAR undermines them on the pitch for subjective decisions. Integrity of the game at stake.
@AlanBiggs1: Pure commonsense. But where does that fit into a debate about VAR?
Sean Dyche on disallowed #EFC goal: “I just don’t know whose referee now. As soon as they go to the screen we all know what’s gonna happen. ‘You’re going to give exactly what you’ve been told’. Why bother with that? It does my head in.”
He’s spot on TBF.
