Scenes at Stockport and Wrexham as both clubs seal promotion to League One

There were joyous scenes at Stockport County and Wrexham as both clubs seal promotion from League Two to League One.

Going into Saturday’s games, we knew that Stockport County would win promotion if they beat Morecambe. A draw against the Shrimps would also be enough to clinch promotion.

However, if Stockport lost their game, they needed MK Dons lose or draw to still go up.

The Hatters could also seal the title if they beat Morecambe and Wrexham and Mansfield Town also lose their fixtures against Forest Green Rovers and MK Dons respectively.

Wrexham also knew they would win promotion from League Two. The Red Dragons would need to beat Forest Green Rovers, while also relying on both MK Dons and Barrow dropping points.

So what happened?

Stockport picked up a 2-0 victory over Morecambe at Edgeley Park while Wrexham thrashed relegation threatened Forest Green at the Racecourse Ground.

Stockport’s Isaac Olaofe volleyed home his 20th goal this season from close range to put The Hatters ahead on the 8th minute.

Then just before half time, Stockport doubled their lead, Fraser Horsfall rose above the rest and headed home a corner.

BBC Radio Manchester’s Robin Grey:

A photo of Stockport’s play-off final defeat to Carlisle last May has been pinned up in the dressing room this season, with manager Dave Challinor using it to spur on his players.

Promotion was the expectation with a big budget and plenty of quality, but County have overcome some hurdles. They only won one of their first six league games.

The first two months of this calendar year saw a mounting injury list and the healthy lead at the top lost.

But ultimately, the record equalling 12-game unbeaten run before Christmas went a long way to securing their place in the third tier for next season.

Challinor is well and truly a promotion king – that’s seven now in 14 years.

Wrexham took the lead at The Racecourse on 17 minutes. Elliot Lee was in the right place at the right time, nabbing the loose ball and tucks it neatly into the back of the Forest Green net.

Paul Mullin then doubled the lead and got his 23rd goal of the season, with the League Two player of the month for March heading home from inside the six-yard-box on 23 minutes.

10 minutes later, Eoghan O’Connell’s effort took a deflection off a Forest Green player – Ryan Inniss – before ending up in the back of the net.

Then it was 4-0 just before the break, Paul Mullin saw his deflected effort from the back post sneak past the Rovers keeper and into the back of the net just before the break.

63 minutes ands Wrexham made it 5-0. A volley from Ryan Barnett then Jack Marriott got a sixth for Wrexham shortly before the final whistle.
