James McClean responds to Daily Mail article after he sings ‘he hates the f***ing King’ chant

James McClean responds to an article put out by the Daily Mail article after he sings the ‘he hates the f***ing King’ chant sung by fans.

It comes just weeks after Prince William’s recent visit to Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground, where he learned about the club’s progress since the takeover Charles and Camilla also visited in December 2022.

James McClean praised Wrexham fans who chanted an anti-King Charles III song after the impressive 6-0 victory over Forest Green Rovers, which secured their promotion to League One.

The Daily Mail ran an article on it, to which James McClean uploaded a screenshot and said in response: “Is this correct? Absolutely and I also sang along at the top of my lungs. Do I make an apologies for doing so? Absolutely not.”

In the last two years, both the King and Prince William, who serves as the president of the FA, have paid notable visits to the club.

During his visit, Prince William was presented with a customised shirt by McElhenney, along with players Luke Young and Ben Tozer, while they were on the pitch. Additionally, he engaged in conversation with manager Phil Parkinson.

Furthermore, The Prince of Wales himself had the opportunity to pour a pint and enjoy a whisky with McElhenney at The Turf pub, which is conveniently located next to Wrexham’s ground.

Reynolds was in New York editing the next Deadpool film when Prince William visit last month, but MailOnline understands he hopes to meet with the second in line to the throne later in the year.

Speaking at Wrexham, William said: ‘It’s a great success story you’re building here, everything you’ve started and achieved it’s fantastic, so onwards and upwards – it’s exciting.

‘And anyone who’s a true football fan wants to see you do well.’

In the first episode of the second season of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, The King made a subtle joke about It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia to McElhenney.

Charles and Camilla met club owners and actors Ryan Reynolds and McElhenney during a tour of Wrexham’s stadium in December 2022, which was broadcast the following September.

McClean, who has been proven to be a divisive figure in British football, and his stance against the Royals, often sparks debate.

Whilst playing for Wigan, McClean called out the English FA for their failure to deal with anti-Irish abuse in the game after an incident took place away at Blackpool.

The FA previously investigated fans singing anti-Pope and anti-IRA songs aimed at McClean on several occasions.

In September 2023, McClean admittted regrets about taking a controversial picture of himself in lockdown ‘jokingly’ home schooling his children in a balaclava, which was interpreted as a reference to the IRA.

For the post, which was then removed, McClean was fined two weeks of wages by Stoke – his club at the time in March 2020.

He then received backlash for turning his back while the national anthem played before a friendly against West Brom in 2015.

The player has always said this is due to his affinity with Derry, and the role of the British Army in the Troubles and Bloody Sunday.

He has also been criticised for his refusal of wearing a poppy during games played across Remembrance weekend, but this is a personal decision he made in 2012, though a stance which sees him get booed for by fans.

He refuses to wear the poppy as the symbol commemorates military personnel who have died in war โ€“ and not just soldiers who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars.

McClean who played for the Republic of Ireland, left Wigan and joined Wrexham in August 2023, scoring three goals for his new club this term.
