Sad news as 10th tier club resign from their league with immediate effect

Sad news announced this week as 10th tier club Wolverhampton Sporting Community resign from their league with immediate effect.

This was first brought to the attention of non league fans on the Non League Matters forum on Wednesday afternoon.

essexian wrote: “first came I note that last evenings match was postponed for “Other Reasons” and that the next match on the 7th is also off for the same reason. No match is scheduled for the following week.

“As their X page has not been updated since New Year, one wonders whether the club has folded or has asked for time in order to restructure?

“Does anyone have any information regarding this?”

windydcfc replied: “They’ve resigned from the NWCL1S”

essexian: As I understand it, they didn’t want to be in the league anyway and, with an average attendance of 30 or so (although when I saw them against Market Drayton earlier this month, the official attendance was 20 less than my head count!) I surprised they could afford it! I wonder if they will restart in the Staffordshire County Senior? If they do, they will find it very competitive! It would be a shame to see such a decent ground go to waste if they did not.

A spokesperson said, per Express & Star, that the club HAD BEEN unhappy with their transfer from the Midland Football League by the FA in the 2024/25 season.

Wolverhampton Sporting Community have been contacted for further comment by Express & Star.

Table to change from 10th February 2026

LEAGUE STATEMENT:

On Monday 2nd February, Wolverhampton Sporting Community gave notification of their intention to resign from The North West Counties Football League, effective from Tuesday 3rd February 2026.

The Board of Directors have reluctantly accepted their resignation from the Competition.

We wish the club all the best for the future and hope that they will be back enjoying football very soon.

Their playing record will therefore be expunged and all player and staff registrations cancelled with effect from 10th February 2026.

It means that the First Division South will run with 18 teams for the remainder of the season.

Our website will be adjusted on the morning of 10th February 2026 to reflect this news and the League will be making no further comment.

Here’s how social media users reacted amid sad news as the 10th tier club resign from their league with immediate effect…

@StaffordTown1st: 🚨 League Update! 🚨 Earlier this morning, we received notification that Wolves Sporting FC have resigned from the league with immediate effect. All of their results will be removed from the league. Whilst we do not know the circumstances that led to WS taking this decision, it’s never nice to see a club have to take such measures. We hope they can regroup and rebuild.

@SportingKhalsa: Sporting Khalsa are saddened to hear of the withdrawal of Wolverhampton Sporting Community FC from the NWCFL. It’s never nice to see a football club struggle for existence, particularly a local club. All are welcome at Noose Lane while the club, hopefully, recovers.

@spoldham: Not a surprise it’s come to this, hopefully the club can regroup and rebuild from next season. They unsuccessfully appealed against their initial placement in the Counties in ’24-25. Brings the makeup of Steps 5 and 6 in the North West and beyond back into focus…

@jordandavies09: This has happened because of the absurd decision to place a Wolverhampton based team in the north-west counties league. In what realm is Wolverhampton in the north-west counties? Come on guys @fa

@Mr78Christopher: Sad to see this. 😢

@YouYeltz: Sad to hear this news about Wolverhampton Sporting – always a shame to see non-league clubs go this way. 🫤😔

@YeltzDoc: A terrible state of affairs. Not the folding of the club, sad though it is for those involved, but the unforgivable missing of the opportunity to use the word, “expunged”.

sixfour: That’s a shame, that’s a decent enough facility and a pretty good away day, but I can see why it’s happened given their very low attendances and location putting them in a division where they’ll need to travel a lot more than most. Hopefully they can rebuild at step 7 or wherever clubs in this situation tend to get put next season

@PhilBrownFTFC: Well done the FA. This is all on you with your ludicrous club placements in completely inappropriate leagues. The North West Counties League is so named because it is intended to cover the north west of England, ie nowhere near Wolverhampton.

@XNisianaki67824: No idea what’s happened here but feel truly sorry for them. Since when was Wolverhampton in the North West of England? Whoever thinks it’s a good idea to force teams playing in front of double digit crowds to travel half the length of the country every other week must be potty.

@robbeal: We had the opposite at Northwich Vics. I completely get it.

@XNisianaki67824: I take your point, mate, and truly sympathise, but at least your club has a fanbase to sustain it while this crazy situation persists. Have you seen the size of WSC’s so-called crowds? They average about 30 people. No wonder the poor buggers have gone under.

@DFCDan94: Yeah they appealed it at the time aswel to not be placed in the counties

@PaulBai39342154: The fa are to blame
