This is what Twitter users had to say as Rushden sign a keeper, who concedes four, headbutts a fan in a bar incident and gets sacked in the same day…

@Fordamous: Has anyone from the club actually reached out to your player at the time to firstly check he’s ok? Secondly to check what has happened? Sounds like you havnt done your duty of care, guilty or not 👍🏼

@Elliot_2008: This is what I thought. And also, why was he and the rest of the squad there anyway? Surely common sense would prevail that after a 4-0 loss with a performance like they had, fans won’t react well. Would’ve thought there mightve been just some friendly advice to go home.

@joannej1970: Suppose the fan was innocent in this and didn’t provoke the player 🤔

@ReeceNuttall_: doesn’t matter, they’re role models and representatives of the club – professionalism comes first

@jonsmithUC: That makes the actions of the player ok, does it? Oh dear.

@andygunn64: Not at all, although it does bring into question the club’s knee jerk reaction. They have a duty of care to both players and fans. There must now be serious safety concerns for anyone who goes anywhere near this club, the fans have been given the green light to goad players 😢

@JimAnker1980: What a load of bollocks. The player in question was told that his performance was shit (which it was) and then reacted by headbutting the person that said it. If every non league player around the country who got told that did that there would be 100s of assaults every weekend

@alfie__foster: Hope the fan didn’t need patching up after it 🙏

@matthammersmith: The statement says about abuse so just presuming this is how it went , fan abused the keeper , the keeper head butted him, correct? So you’d imagine the keeper be dealt with 100% and let go etc but is the supporter going to be banned for abuse? As above it says no abuse ?

@AAdrive: 💯 there’s 2 sides to every story. Not condoning, but there’s definitely another side

@matthammersmith: No keeper is out of order doing it there is no getting away from it I don’t know him just at same time he has had a howler don’t need your own fans then abusing you, likewise we don’t know what was said it could be really not much and he has over reacted

@GuruNorthants: @AFCRD can you let everyone know what you’ll be doing to keep your players safe please? Allowing fans to abuse players is really putting those who represent you in a vulnerable position if they react. Will abusive supporters be banned from the ground/bar?

@DanTheMan1982_: Absolute fucking moron. Bet he’s really proud of himself the w⚓️

@northantspinty6: Hell of a debut

@amyhughesphoto: Shambles from my local deary me

@chrishurling: You can’t make it up 😂😂😂😂😂

@Elliot_2008: Shame. Lad is genuinely so nice whenever I’ve seen or spoke to him. Hopefully everyone involved is ok

@JimAnker1980: Bloke should be banned from football for a very long time. He won’t ever be allowed at any of our games again

@JamesOb76: Non league gives you access to the players in a way that league football doesn’t 😬

@_sarax91: New keeper concedes 4 then goes & headbutts a fan. What a debut 🤣
