Rotherham United thrash Blackburn Rovers in extraordinary style with one of the goals scored directly from a corner on Saturday afternoon.
Hakeem Ooffin found the net on 33 seconds to kick start the Millers’ much needed victory with Rotherham going four points clear of the Championship relegation zone following today’s 4-0 win.
The defender put the Millers ahead with a sweet strike from the edge of the box as they made the perfect start trying to end a winless run of four defeats in six league games.
Rovers responded and dominated possession with Bradley Dack and Ryan Hedges wasting excellent first-half chances.
But Ollie Rathbone’s thunderous 18-yard shot made it 2-0 soon after the interval, debutant Shane Ferguson scored with an inswinging corner and Conor Washington’s sharp turn and strike sealed an impressive victory.

Rotherham’s Matt Taylor:
“We have felt pretty low for the last six weeks or so. We have been lower than a snake’s belly. There was intent and we were up in their faces and there was great execution in the quality of the goals. That first goal gave us a huge boost. There has been honesty from myself, the players and the staff, we have brought some players in and changed the shape.
“We have simplified our approach to the game which seemed to help the players. We have generally kept a good team at arm’s length. The message to the players before the game was we were in a 20-game season now and we’re in the fight of our lives. It’s the biggest fight I have ever been in and we have to show that. When you are confronted with a challenge you’ve got one or two options. You can run away and hide and make excuses or you can stand up to it and put your best foot forward. That was the way we went about our business today.”
Blackburn’s Jon Dahl Tomasson:
“It’s a disappointing result and a poor performance. We talked about starting the game well and then conceded in the first minute. We had three big opportunities to get back in the game in the first half. They are probably the three best chances in the game. You need to take those chances. We need to apologise to our fans because it was a poor performance.
“The second goal killed us a bit. We need to stay in the game. We need to be creative in the final third. It was not good enough. It’s an extremely young squad and it is something they need to learn. There are no excuses. We can win every game and lose every game.”
This is what fans said as Rotherham thrash Blackburn in extraordinary style with one of the goals directly from a corner…
@niall_m91: Terrific management that. We won’t score two worldies and direct from a corner every week but MT desperately needed to make us less porous and the change in system achieved that. We’ll never be Brazil but if you’re hard to score against you give yourself a chance. #rufc
@leg_end81: Did not see that coming #rufc
@murph86: 4 huge goals today, 4 different players, 4 stonking goals, what a result! #rufc
@PaytonKurt: That’s a proper Rotherham United Performance right there. Fight from absolutely everyone made it look like we was was the team 3rd in the league that game. Odoffin and Ferguson best game for rotherham so far. 433 worked an absolute treat today. Big 3 points #rufc
@Hannn_95x: Pressed from start to finish, that’s the Rotherham we know. Buzzing for Odoffin to get his 1st lge goal. Back 4 were solid. Awesome all round from everyone today. Rathbone was insanely good! Viktor’s save was crucial at 2-0 up. Top performance from all the lads today. UTM #rufc
@MadMillerMan: Much improved performance against a poor #brfc who never really tested us defensively. It is telling though that in a game where we have scored 4 goals our need for another attacking option is obvious. Great game let’s hope we can add a few more bodies & kick off from here #rufc
@Joehadfield1986: #rufc I’ve criticised Taylor over last few games as I didn’t think he was getting best out of the team. Today that was more like it pressing and playing with wingers to attack teams. If we play like that and lose then no complaints from me
@johnk_88: That was worth freezing my bollocks off for. What a win #RUFC
@Rufcjoe87: Almost like Taylor knows what he’s doing eh #rufc
@babylonrass: Wow just Wow, this bloke knows what he’s doing and switching it worked great. Excellent game 👏👏👏👏. All played well, thought @shane_fergie @HakeemOdoffin and @ollie_rathbone were fandabidozie #rufc
@ldgmostdef: Rathbone clear today (but tbf has been for weeks). Taylor knows what’s needed. Experienced heads. Good shape and tenacity. Disruptive subs. He’s the right guy. #rufc
@WillDanielsRUFC: Further proof that in the Championship you cannot take your foot off the gas for a second. Relentless out of possession, the quality of finishing sublime. Tactically excellent from Taylor and team. Made a top 6 team look extremely poor. Rotherham United are back. #rufc
@Rufcjoe87: 4 shots in target. 4 goals. Them clinical Millers. I like this tactic…. If you’re only gonna have few shots on target, just score all the ones you do 😂#rufc
@daveelvin89: That’s more like it. What we want to see. Playing a bit more football and pressing them. Three outstanding goals scored. Miles better with a back four. Washington and Rathbone outstanding. #rufc
@deano_rufc: We needed that. Much prefer us in a 433. The whole back four and Viktor outstanding. Morrison amd Hjelde great signings based on that. Hopefully this is a turning point #rufc
@andrew_mchale1: Absolutely superb from the lads! The new signings look 👏 and hopefully that’s Taylor stamping what he wants us to do with the players he wants in the team. A couple more in the door would be ideal next week #utm #rufc 🔴⚪🔴⚪🔴⚪
@MightyMillers20: What a performance that was absolutely brilliant Mozza & Leo at back fecking stunning first game 4 stunning goals 3 massive points that’s the Rotherham we know and love fight for badge is all we ask get in boys Up The Fecking Millers Mozza Man Of The Match proper leader #rufc
@EdwardJ1994: What a performance to come back from such a dip. Proud of the lads and buzzing for Taylor. Up The Millers. #rufc
@rufc_pod: You wouldn’t believe that was the same team that player last week. So good
@MattSpilly: Every single player on that pitch should be proud of that performance. Hopefully this is a new beginning. Solid. Brilliant. #rufc
