Rotherham fans gutted after leading contender for manager’s job pulls out

Rotherham United fans have been left gutted after Nathan Jones, who had been the leading contender for the manager’s job, pulls out.

Sources have told Football Insider that the 50 year old Welshman has ruled himself out of the running to be the next Millers manager.

He had been last in charge of Southampton, but lasted just three months in the role before he was sacked, leaving the club with just one league win in eight matches.

Southampton were bottom of the league at the time of his departure and was the shortest serving non-caretaker manager in the club’s history.

Reports last week claimed he was in talks of taking up the role at Rotherham United, meting with club officials, and was even spotted in the stands for the Millers’ goalless draw with Wayne Rooney‘s Birmingham City, though journalist Paul Davis did write that it wasn’t guaranteed that he’d take up the position.

But it seems he’s had a change of heart and is no longer in the running to become the new Rotherham manager, just as fans hoped to be hearing news of his appointment.

Paul Davis said on Monday evening he had been interviewed early last week and offered the job.

He watched the game on Saturday, prior to making a final decision, and ultimately decided not to go ahead with the decision, with Stevenage boss Steve Evans reportedly back in the frame, but Rotherham are back to the drawing board, yet made tougher with no back-up option, Leam Richardson and Gary Rowett could also enter the mix but the club are clearly in quite the pickle.

Caretaker manager Wayne Carlisle had given an update prior to this weekend’s clash on when Rotherham United hope to make a new-boss appointment.

“I know they are keen on one of the candidates and they’re hoping to get it progressed in the next 48 to 72 hours,” said Wayne Carlisle, as per Rotherham Advertiser.

He has been pleased that the search for a new manager looked to be coming to an end, having lasted around three-weeks at the time of his comments, but now it looks to go on even further.

“The most important people at any football club are the players,” Carlisle said. “The longer this process has gone on, the more uncertainty there is among them.

“This morning, Rob Scott spoke with the players before we had our match prep. He outlined where the club were at with stuff without putting any names forward.

“That settles the players. You could feel it. They’re starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, which is brilliant for them.”

Wayne Carlisle remains happy to be in charge for however long they need him.

“I had to be prepared and be organised,” he said. “The players, the club and the fans deserve that. We’d prepped as normal but we were ready to drop that if need be.”

As mentioned, Rotherham fans were left gutted after reports claim the leading contender for the manager’s job pulls out, this is what Twitter users are saying…

@Jordanc_996: What a fucking shambles. #rufc

@smith98_josh: No experienced championship manager will ever come to this club whilst ever we’ve got this board, simple as. We’re run like a pub team from top to bottom. #rufc

@MillersTomO: Just know he’ll get the next available Championship job in no time at all. He’s probably already been approached by another club who are about to sack their manager, and will take charge within hours of said sacking. Watch and learn Tony ffs #rufc

@RUFCElliot: May as well stick with Wayne Carlisle at this point. We’re down regardless. #rufc

@abs_rufc: just one boring, simple, easy period to be a Rotherham fan is all I’m wanting ffs🤦🏼‍♀️

@Rufcjoe87: Richardson or Carlisle then. Yay. We’re an absolute joke club. Knee jerk sack our manager “while there’s still time”. Chairman goes on hol. Miss out on first 3 choices. Nearly 4 weeks and 3 games later… Still no manager. I said if we sack Taylor we’d be disappointed because no one wants it…… It’s gonna get really ugly if we’ve waited 4 weeks and end up with Carlisle or Richardson. Down with a whimper. Kept saying it and got abuse but we are not an attractive postotion for any manager with championship experience. Best we can hope for is (another) inexperienced league 1 manager. Which is why it was daft sacking Taylor. Wish I’d have been proven wrong. Glad I haven’t bought me ticket for sat yet lol. It’s the hope that kills you isn’t it. Time for board to sell up, no? Stagnating and risking going backwards as it is… We’re a joke on and off the pitch. Why would you wanna manage us? We’re a joke on and off the pitch. Why would you wanna manage us? Poor squad. No money. Poor training facilities. Huge task to keep us up. Aging short term squad. Board who haven’t a clue. Why would you? #rufc

@cal_howis: Bit of communication from the club wouldn’t go amiss…… #rufc

@runningmillerz: He had a tour of Roundwood and thought ‘fuck that, I’m not working out of a shipping container’ #rufc

@martinbyrne: #rufc bring in heckingbottom in if Jones has tuned us down.

@CraigyBoyBes: Think Jones was probably put off the job when TS started talking about his expectation of reaching the Prem on the lowest budget in the Championship #rufc

@LewisOldham99: Gutted. N Jones would have been the perfect fit for #RUFC. It all seemed too good to be true and that’s proven to be the case. Back to square one it is… It’ll be Wayne Carlisle at this rate 😅

@ShirtsofNeil: FFS, this is beyond a joke now! Carlisle until the end of the season? 🤷‍♂️ #rufc

@rufc_pod: Another day in the life of being a Millers fan #rufc

@AlmightyMcMuff: Wayne carlisle to end of season or permanent the Stewart way #rufc

@Jameshawley80: Just give it Carlisle……

@donnaalamrie: Absolute Shit Show

@BCartledge_: Like a Netflix series, drama 🤣

@Owen__Connell: Great. Wayne Carlisle getting job then #rufc

@RUFC_Tiny: You better be fucking joking

@hyrum_rufc: Knew it was too good to be true #rufc

@JoeIinton: Currently Punching walls

@MJCollins97: We are pathetic

@rufc__cal: fuck off 🤣🤣

@The_RUFC: Ffs, whoever we get in, his name better fit nicely into an Aqua song #RUFC

@OJClxy: Thinks he’s better than he is
