Fans label Nathan Jones ‘an egomaniac’ as he reflects on his time at Southampton and Luton

Fans have took to label out of work manager Nathan Jones as ‘an egomaniac’ as he reflects on his time at Southampton and Luton Town.

The head coach was in the Sky Sports studio on Saturday looking back on his spells in charge of the two clubs, but his interview was again mocked by viewers on social media.

He was with talking with the broadcaster on the same day that Southampton face potentially being relegated from the Premier League, with Luton also playing in the evening in their Championship playoff semi final first leg against Sunderland.

Interviewer: Do you think they’re massively different to the team that you left in terms of the way they play?

NJ: No, and I don’t at all. I think obviously there’ll be subtle changes, but I think the formation, the personnel, the type of clean sheets and goals and everything they scored, it was just based on structure. We had two different structures from the time I was there at League Two and League One. We were a real possession based, fluent, real good attack inside. Then when I came back, they were in a different place. So we had to build something new and we built it on the same foundations and the same recruitment policies. But we went a different way in terms of being really athletic, really front footed and very difficult to play against because we were very respectful that we went up a level in terms of the Championship, in a very unforgiving league. And every year, we’ve improved. What? Myself and the CEO would sit down every single summer and said, all we need to do is make sure we keep the club moving forward on a safe platform so there’s no trapdoors where they think no trapdoors, so we didn’t overspend, so that that would come back. And if they didn’t do something, then that came back to haunt them. It’s a real, sane, wonderful football club, built on people, on an excellent philosophy, great recruitment and wonderful human beings.

Interviewer: And also incredibly hard to play against. I don’t think I’ve ever watched the Luton game and thought the opposition have had a nice afternoon there’s. Physicality and the work ethic, particularly the central midfielders, get through so many miles in kilometers. That, again, must be something that you take great pride in, that now, under Rob, but also under you. No one would have ever enjoyed a match against Luton Town.

NJ: No. And look at the work ethics right throughout the club, from, as I said, from the top right to the bottom to the groundsmen, to every single thing. Everyone, one team, one goal. That’s what we created there, especially at Kenilworth Road. It’s an extremely difficult place, there’s not many that go there, and I’m talking Premier League sides. We give Chelsea a really uncomfortable time a year or so ago, but they’re a wonderfully, honest team and talented because they can play both ways. If it turns into a football game, Luton can play football. If it turns into a war, then that suits them and anything in between, Luton can handle it. They’re a wonderful side. But you look at the playoffs today and there’s four real, real good sides. Different, but real, real good side. It’s going to be an interesting playoff campaign, this one. Yeah.

Interviewer: How do you see the challenge of Sunderland for Luton?

NJ: I think it’s not chalk and cheese, because that would be disrespectful to both, but I think Sunderland are a really young, fluent, difficult side to play against in a different way. Luton have the capabilities to handle that. But Sunderland are a wonderful, wonderful side. Tony is very innovative in how he works his Blackburn side. We had a difficult game against his Blackburn side to stay in the league a few years ago, and at times it can be unorthodox. They’ve had to play with no recognised striker, very few recognised centre halves as well. So they’ve had to play a certain way, and they’re very dangerous doing it. They’re in great form. So Luton be a wonderful, wonderful game, I think

He added: “I absolutely think Luton can do it. I think they’re very difficult to beat over two games. It’ll take some side to beat them. And then I think the final can be anything can happen.

“I think any four, the sides can win it, I really do. I mean, you look at the job Michael Carrick’s done there wonderful for where he took them, over to where they are now and the times they have proven to be the best one day side. Seen them play them play against Norwich, seen them play against Sheffield United away and put in two of the best performances I’ve seen in the Championship. So they are a real threat. Got some wonderful players. Chuba Akpom with the Championship player of the season. And then you look at the unorthodox way that Sunderland play.

“So any one of those four can win. I think it’s really, really open. But it’s going to be very exciting because regardless of points differences we saw last night with Sheffield Wednesday and Peterborough, the playoffs are a different animal and you have to be ready for them.”

Fans label Nathan Jones ‘an egomaniac’ as he reflects on his time at Southampton and Luton…

@lloydyhomann: Appreciate where nathan took us but under Edwards we’ve become a much better all rounded side, with a plan b when going a goal down.

@chazabbb: i like him but he couldn’t be more wrong

@dharvey4: He had Luton using every dark art in the book against us, awful to watch

@MaxPollard92: Hmm, not sure I completely agree here 😂

@churchychurch14: The football is better under Edwards….

@mikedoney: We went long under NJ way more than we do now. There are many of the same players but there are subtle differences between how we play today versus 6 months back so I have to disagree on that comment.

@Chris_Horner1: Delusional and an egomaniac!

@ryanlewis79: He’s so up himself, tosser

@LTFCShirts:
Nathan Jones: W7 D8 L5
Rob Edwards: W14 D8 L3
Luton are a better team under Rob Edwards

@ScottLTFC: No disrespect Nathan, but we are a different team to what you left

@lfcfred7: nathan jones is a mega twat part 54

@nathancarty112: I disagree they look so much better under Edwards

@shanewright53: Nathan Jones built the foundations years ago but Rob Edwards has done an outstanding job, fingers crossed for today🤞🏻

@DS215uk: Comedy gold this bloke

@lutonboys: Couldn’t be more wrong unfortunately and not giving Rob Edwards a shout out is classless, especially when Edwards is mindful always to do the reverse.

@J1875_: Blokes a helmet lmao Luton look miles better under Edwards

@Bigcollins888: every club he’s been at get better when he’s gone 😂

@KrobertsonKaren: Disagree NJ.

@rhys_scfc_: Delusional 😂😂

@mattyw13: Like the most arrogant man on planet earth was going to admit Rob Edwards has made them better 🤣

@jane738: Wrong. Look at possession compared to when Nathan was manager. He is implying that the new manager has not made progress which is unfair. Nathan was a good manager at LTFC but his successor has taken us a better team.

@phil_spudhead: Biggest self promoter going . Did well at Luton absolutely flunked at Southampton and stoke

@Jackquinnell3: What an a grade tosser

@up_the_ARSE_nal: Comes across as an absolute prick.

@chrisrich88: What a load of bollox … we are a decent footballing side now.. NJ was hoof ball this year absolute shit too watch. Mans a clown

@BamfordDean: Most deluded man in football, he actually thought he did well at Scumhampton and it was everyone elses fault they did so bad 🤷‍♂️
