Rotherham condemn the ‘shameful’ acts of violence in towns and cities across the country

Rotherham United join a number of clubs who have taken to condemn the ‘shameful’ acts of violence in towns and cities across the country.

The riot in Rotherham saw to a series of clashes that occurred on the 4th of August, with far-right protesters who targeted a hotel the Holiday Inn Express, which was being used to house asylum seekers.

The protesters threw objects at the hotel, including wooden fence panels and glass bottles, and attempted to set the building on fire.

Riot police were deployed to control the situation, and at least one officer was injured.

The riot was part of a series of far-right protests riots that occurred across the United Kingdom in the wake of a stabbing attack which saw three young girls lose their lives and others wounded at a children’s dance in Southport a week ago.

The attack had triggered Islamophobic and anti-immigration sentiments in the country, leading to widespread unrest.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Rotherham United strongly condemn the abhorrent acts of racism, violence and vandalism that have been carried out across our town and throughout the country over the weekend.

The club totally and completely dissociates itself from the shameful actions of a small minority, which are in no way representative of our football club, supporters and community.

Rotherham United prides itself on being a club that provides an environment in which everyone can enjoy their football and will always operate a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of discrimination.

We stand shoulder to shoulder with the wider community in condemning these actions and remain committed to making the AESSEAL New York Stadium a place where everyone is welcome.

Rotherham join the likes of Hull City, Bolton Wanderers and Sunderland in so far issuing a statement on the rioting going on in the last week or so.

There has been protests, disorder and arrests made in Manchester, Hull, Liverpool, Bristol, Stoke-on-Trent, Blackpool, Belfast, Sunderland, Hartlepool, Weymouth, Blackpool, Southport, Leeds, Aldershot, Leicester, London, Rotherham, Middlesbrough andTamworth with missiles thrown and shops looted.

And the list of placings being added to that are growing with every day that passes by.

Sir Keir Starmer isn’t going on holiday this week “as was always the plan”, as per Downing Street, but refused to say whether the Prime Minister would be taking time off next week.

His official spokesperson said: “The Prime Minister was working over the weekend and will continue to work this week, as was always the plan.”

He added: “I only ever talk about the week ahead for the Prime Minister’s diary, and as I’ve confirmed from the front pages, he’s working from Downing Street this week.

“We’ll set out any holiday plans in the usual way.”

So far, over 400 people have been arrested since Saturday with five arrested in Rotherham where South Yorkshire Police warned those who took part, “we will find you”.

The prime minister met with relevant ministers and police representatives at Downing Street on Monday morning in talks in trying to ensure there is no repeat of the violent scenes we’ve seen.

Addressing the nation on Sunday, Keir told those causing acts of violence that they would “regret” engaging in “far-right thuggery” and said those involved in the escalating disorder would “face the full force of the law”.

No requests have been made for Army assistance to stop the riots, Downing Street say.

After Monday morning’s emergency Cobra meeting, the Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “The police are very clear that they’ve got the powers and resources they need to protect communities and keep people safe.

“There’s been no requests made for any military assistance, that I’m aware of.”

Sir Keir Starmer paid tribute to police officers tackling disorder on Britain’s streets during Monday morning’s emergency Cobra meeting.

His official spokesman told reporters: “The Prime Minister convened a meeting of Cobra this morning to update on the response for the disorder we’ve seen. This follows a series of meetings last week and over the weekend.

“Cobra was attended by the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister, Home Secretary, Justice Secretary, DSIT (Department for Science, Innovation and Technology) Secretary, Attorney General, Chief Secretary and leaders from police, prison service, NCA (National Crime Agency) and other senior officials.

“The PM paid tribute to the hard work of police officers over the past week and sent best wishes to those who have been injured protecting our streets.

“There have been hundreds of arrests and people are already being charged, and police will continue to update on the specifics in relation to progress or arrests and charging.

“The police are continuing to deploy additional resource around the country at strategic locations where necessary.”
