There was ridiculous limbs at Portman Road as Ipswich Town score a 97th minute winner in a stunning comeback to beat Southampton.
The Tractorboys secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Southampton to return to the top of the Championship table ahead of Leeds’ game against Hull, and after Leicester had gone to the top having beaten Norwich in the lunchtime kick off.
Nathan Broadhead levelled after Che Adams and Adam Armstrong cancelled out Leif Davis’ goal; and then Jeremy Sarmiento scored with practically the last kick off the game to win it.

Sky Sports said it best in their report: “The promotion race takes YET ANOTHER huge twist at the death!
“Not content with the game fizzling out, Ipswich keep fighting right until the last and score what is surely the winner with barely 10 seconds to go.
“A raking diagonal ball finds Davis on the left, where he has space in the absence of Bree to look into the area.
“He picks out Sarmiento with a low cross and though the substitute slips at first, he gets to his feet and immediately squirms an effort into the bottom corner past a despairing Bazunu dive.
“The scenes inside Portman Road are something else. The Championship is something else.
“Sarmiento is mobbed by his team-mates and Ipswich’s coaching staff. He takes the plaudits – but it was the whole team who never gave up.
“Russell Martin walks over to the away end applauding, stony-faced. That’s a painful one.
“I feel like we say this every week, but hook The Championship to my veins. What a league.”
Sky Sports’ Andy Hinchcliffe at Portman Road: “The strength of character of Ipswich is there for all to see. This is a MASSIVE three points for them.
Ipswich match winner Jeremy Sarmiento: “At the start of the game, I got told I wasn’t starting and was a bit upset. But coming on as a late sub, you always know there’s going to be chances.
“I was ready for that moment.”
Jo Tessem (Ex-Southampton midfielder on BBC Radio Solent): “They dug in and dug-in and counter-attacked. You can see why Leif Davis has so many goals and assists from that left hand side.
“They have stuck to the plan tactically and in the end very well done Ipswich.
“I feel very sorry for Southampton, but in football you have to be able to stand up and deal with different things like that – that’s why they won’t be going up automatically.”
Ipswich: Hladky, Tuanzebe (Clarke, 61), Woolfenden, Burgess, Davis, Morsy (C), Luongo (Taylor, 61), Jackson (Broadhead, 61), Chaplin (Sarmiento, 89), Hutchinson, Moore (Al-Hamadi, 36).
Subs: Walton, Edmundson, Travis, Harness.
Southampton: Bazunu, Bree, Stephens, Harwood-Bellis, Bednarek, S Armstrong (Smallbone, 82) , Downes, Fraser (Brooks, 71), Aribo (Rothwell, 82), Adams (Edozie, 77), A Armstrong.
Subs: Lumley, Walker-Peters, Manning, Mara, Sulemana.
Att: 29,393 (1,969 away fans)
Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna told BBC Radio Suffolk:
“I feel really proud of the effort everyone put in there. You have to enjoy moments like that. What a game to be a part of.
“There were so many good things in the performance and so much to improve. It was a real step up for us in quality to play a team like that.
“All of the subs had a great impact and it’s the sign of our culture. All of our players and staff are joyous in the dressing room. We have to enjoy it.”
Southampton head coach Russell Martin told BBC Radio Solent:
“Their (winning) goal came out of nothing. It shouldn’t go in and Gavin (Bazunu) should do better. He’ll know that.
“At 2-2 I thought we’d be the team that could win it but the red card changed everything. We should score more and can’t concede the way we did.
“We came here with so many brilliant performances. It’s so disappointing to lose. We were the best team tonight.
“The performance was great but moments have cost us. There’s 24 points to play for and we have to win every game now.”
Twitter users reacted to the ridiculous limbs as Ipswich score a 97th minute winner in a stunning comeback to beat Southampton…
@JordanMotherwa3: The championship is skys above the PL
@RochdaleRhino: As a Leeds fan you have to give Ipswich their due they were second best for a large part of that game but stuck to their task and got their win. If they finish on top or second they will clearly deserve it
@leahcim77: Fair play @IpswichTown what a story. Really hope you go up from a Coventry City supporter. Though I hope we beat you in a few weeks 😜
@Ben020990: The commentary for championship from who this is year in year out is so good
@SamPageVideos: I cannot believe what I have just witnessed!! This team never dies 🔵⚪️
@Forest_No_22: Absolutely love that from Ipswich Town. 87pts from 40 games straight outta League 1 is remarkable. We know how hard it is competing against the parachutes. Keep going tractor boys! Denying Leeds or Leicester – the whole country is behind you 🤜
@AO1865: Some people have been seriously injured 😂
@Richbow79: Incredible. Enjoy these times Ipswich fans. Next season won’t be all you dream it to be 🙃
@brayash24: Some seasons pretty much everything goes your way and you’re destined for promotion. Great to see another Charlton academy boy excelling
@Den_AFC: Absolute fucking scenes. If you’re not locked into the Championship promotion battle at the moment, then what are you doing?
@richardlee91091: “Walking in the footsteps of giants, but these players are making their own history” 👏 terrific commentary that. Absolutely buzzing my tits off #itfc
@CLC__x: Loads of season ticket holders at work won’t be able to speak in the morning 😂
@joelmurray: Zero surprise from me that Ipswich turned that game round with a 97th minute deflected winning goal 🤦♂️
@WiggumCharm: Made up for #ITFC. Their journey to this point has been mostly hellish. A generation of misery, a few years in League One purgatory, nothing to shout about. Then they find a gaffer who turns it all around overnight, and end up with scenes like these. Thoroughly deserved! 🚜
@tailso1988: The job Kieran McKenna has done at Ipswich has been quite incredible back to back promotions to PL would be sensational
