Relegation favourites Oxford comfortably beat Norwich for first second tier win in 25 years

Championship relegation favourites Oxford United comfortably beat Norwich City for their first win in the second tier in 25 years.

The U’s got their opener in the 28th minute, Grant Hanley failed to deal with a long ball forward and Mark Harris pounced. He cut inside, skipped past one challenge then found the net through the goalkeeper’s legs.

Shortly into the second half, Cameron Brannagan saw his first-time strike take a deflection and looped onto the bar with Angus Gunn beaten.

Cam did however managed to find the net on the 58th minute, the home fans going wild after Brannagan met Sam Long’s ball and made it 2-0 with a side footed finish, leaving the keeper with no chance of getting to it.

In the final minutes of the game, ‘Ole’s’ could be heard with every pass Oxford were making, they really didn’t see this result coming.

The hosts kept pushing on for a third goal, coming close on a few occasions, while Norwich also left it until the final 10 minutes to show any spark, but couldn’t find that goal.

Here’s how fans reacted as relegation favourites Oxford comfortably beat Norwich for their first second tier win in 25 years…

@MisterTomox: We look so damn good 🥰 #OUFC

@BacktoDack: Just going to put it out there. If Oxford play like this all season then they’re serious playoff contenders. #OUFC #NCFC #skybetchampionship

@JField97: Really well played. An excellent side, really well drilled under a fantastic coach. As poor as we were today you deserve all the credit. Good luck for the exciting season ahead 🤝🏾💛

@HERDETZY: Can we please just acknowledge how well Sam Long played please #OUFC

@GeorgeHogg93: Someone pinch me! Did we really do that today? That was just a sensational performance! Welcome to the Championship indeed! Today could not have gone any better. We’ve outplayed them Canaries from minute one. An opening day win with a loud crowd all game, terrific #oufc 💙💛

@Horsesplayharps: Just heard coming out of the stadium: “Championship is a piece of piss!” #OUFC #Oxfnor

@KieranMilward: Jake Humphrey, Simon Thomas, Delia Smith, Alan Partridge.. your boys took a hell of a beating. Superb. #OUFC

@ankh: Naaaaaa have we actually just started the season with a win and a clean sheet.. This isn’t a dream is it 🥴🥴 #OUFC

@MadeInTheManor_: Until today, until I sat in my seat in the Kassam Stadium, until I saw the lads coming out of the tunnel, until that first whistle blew ‘it didn’t seem real. It’s been utterly surreal but here we are and it’s amazing. Winning 2-0 on the first game of the season too 👌🏻👏🏻 #OUFC

@oufc_adam: Superb result and performance! Wow. We deserved that 🤩 #OUFC

@NCFCDiscontent:
FT #OUFC 2-0 #NCFC
Kassam Kalamity! Where were the 3x CMs for 2nd goal? Unchallenged overlap and empty area. Tactical flexibility and quick decision making are +ives but what does it say to abandon your formation after a full pre-season in the first 90 mins of the season…

@Jack_Matt1209: What a performance! Don’t think it could’ve gone much better than that. Not a player who looked out of place at this level at all. And to put the icing on the cake, Manning’s Bristol conceding a 90th minute equaliser to Hull. What an opening day! 🥳🤣 #oufc

@OUFC_NA: What a great game. Did what we did again Bolton, played some great stuff and suffocated the opposition. Long season ahead but couldn’t be a better start. #OUFC

@NCFCContent:
FT #OUFC 2-0 #NCFC
Spare a thought for Doyle, from Championship winner to Kassam Kalamity.
Spare a thought for Gibbs, poor Liam, RinseRepeat.
Spare a thought for Idah, who did not deserve to be booed.
Spare a thought for this, it is just a game… 45 left… sh*t
#CanaryCall

@JLongshanks7: Gonna win all 3 aren’t we? #OUFC #SexyDesIsAtTheWheel

@Rosie_may16: Couldn’t have had a better start to the Championship 👏 brilliant all round performance.
Vaulks and Placheta showing what brilliant signings they are. Nice to see us still press even when we are 2 up, more of that hopefully 💛💙 #oufc

@Ryan_Livermore: Poor? Yes. But there’s only real cause for concern if this is still the standard after the first international break. Going to a promoted team, particularly in the state #NCFC are in, is the worst kind of fixture to have. Doesn’t excuse the inadequacies, but early days still.

@NI_Canary: The Carrow Road faithful have to show that they’ll forgive mistakes, as long as it’s young players making them. Starting on Tuesday. Then again next Saturday. There’s no point moaning if we see similar if Thorup makes changes and the young players get their chance #NCFC

@Gary_Gowers: Patience and all that … but a #ncfc performance of few redeeming features. Every bit as anaemic as the colour of the shirts. As others have said, let’s hope for most of the old boys this is their Russell Martin/Marcel Franke moment.

@AntonyBeales: That was as bad as anything served up under DS & DW, lots of work required for JHT which we knew, however this one’s on the players, they were poor, sloppy and careless, new CB pairing against Blackburn would be a start #trustinyouth #NCFC

@DJ7gaga: Best performance by an Oxford teams in around 3 years really made Norwich one of the favourites look awful. Pretty much 10/10 team performance. Championship we are here to stay.

@robmitchell_5: Best result of the 3 promoted teams, who picked that….. #OUFC

@realpaulhawtin: That wasn’t too bad that 💛💙 💪 #COYY #OUFC #EFLChampionship

@Joe_Citrone: We didn’t come this far to only come this far… 💛💙 #oufc

@IsaacOUFC: Sir Des Buckingham, No MOTM today for me, all were absolutely immense 💛

@RobertF195: Excellent start. Couldn’t of gone much better than that

@ben_ambrose23: We could all see what was going to happen on the pitch when that XI was released – the shocking part is Rowe just deciding to toss away his relationship with a fanbase that adores him. What’s to say to his future employer that he won’t just do it again? Embarassing. #ncfc
