Reaction after Man City are found guilty on all but one of the 115 charges

We check out the reaction on Man City being found guilty on all but one of the 115 charges, breaching league financial regulations.

On Friday afternoon, The Athletic’s David Ornstein broke the news, adding that City are expected to appeal against the verdict issued by independent commission.

We are yet to find out what sanctions they face, with the process ongoing. Meanwhile, BBC Sport report that the Premier League have declined to comment.

A spokesman for Man City said to The Athletic: “The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality. As such Manchester City FC’s position remains consistent with the club’s statement of February 2023.

“The club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis that the Premier League board and executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator, free from partisan influence.”

Man City said in a statement back in February 2023: “Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with.

“The Club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent Commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position.

“As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire said to BBC Sport: “The ramifications will be significant.

“It’s very much a two-stage process because if we recall Chelsea were found guilty of a significant number of charges by both the Premier League and the Football Association. Their sanction was a fine and that fine was something the club was happy to absorb.

“I would imagine if Manchester City have been found guilty and we’re still waiting a confirmation of that, then they will be delighted if they’re just given a fine.

“But I expect that other clubs and most commentators would anticipate some form of points deduction, if not worse.

“And then we move into another phase because we’ve recently seen with Everton being fined £35 million by a claim from Burnley.

“There could be a long series of litigation from clubs who feel that they have been disadvantaged during the period when Manchester City were in breach of the rules.”

@BoringMilner: I won 2 Premier League titles with Man City. I won 1 Premier League title with Liverpool. Liverpool also finished second to Man City twice while I was a Red. If those titles are stripped from Man City and given to Liverpool, I’ll have 3 Premier League titles with Liverpool and 0 with Man City. So even with Man City’s cheating, I am still a 3-time Premier League winner. Result.

@ToonTakeover_: I wouldn’t get too excited about this. It took them nearly 4 years to find them guilty. Probably another 2-3 year wait for the subsequent appeal/punishment. And even then, it’ll just be a transfer ban for a year or so and a small points deduction. ….and even if they were relegated, they’d simply win the Championship with a record number of wins and points. That’s the thing with this case, you can’t erase history…. the damage is already done. Man City are global football powerhouse and will forever be one.

@AliceTalksFooty: The punishment Man City get will really show how much balls the Premier League have got. Being found guilty on that many charges should send them to the national league but something tells me it will be something dumb like a fine (that won’t impact them) + a transfer ban.

@LewisDeighton17: They won’t relegate City. The business/brand is too big. Hefty fine, multi-window transfer ban, points deduction that’s not too damaging, possibly even strip them of titles. No matter what ‘punishment’ City get, the damage to their reputation is done. No more ‘we won this and we won that’, the response will be…you cheated. It was dirty. Etc. It’s an embarrassment to the supposed best league in the world that they even got away with it for so long.

@Spartanblue67: What should happen – City relegated to 4th tier , stripped of titles / cups , massive fine and 5 year transfer ban. What PL will actually impose – Everton docked 10 points and fined £50m. City get fined a tenner and get a transfer ban until this January.

@whualfie_: Man City fans will not care about this (and they shouldn’t tbh) they’re still gonna have the memories of winning in Porto and winning them league titles now a potential cheeky tour in league 1 and championship… the match going fans will love.
