Ranking Arsenal’s Greatest Champions League Nights This Season

Arsenal is back in the Champions League final for the first time since 2006. They’ll face PSG in Budapest on May 30 in what is one of the most highly anticipated games for the club in many years. It’s fighting on two fronts, as it tries to also take home its first Premier League title for over two decades.

The odds on Champions League glory currently favour PSG, but Arsenal has regularly defied the bookies this season to continue grinding out results with gritty performances. This article looks at some of the most pivotal moments during Arsenal’s run to the 2025/2026 Champions League final.

The Perfect League Phase

Arsenal won all eight games during the league phase of the competition, which is very impressive, as no other team has managed to do so since this league phase was introduced. The highlight was at this stage came over Inter Milan and Bayern Munich. The football didn’t always excite, but it was extremely effective.

Arteta has developed a team that can control matches in several ways, whether it’s pressing high when necessary or sitting deeper and absorbing pressure. The team always looks dangerous on the break. Arsenal was well established as one of the tournament frontrunners by the time the knockout rounds began.

Beating Bayer Leverkusen in the Last 16

Bayer Leverkusen had a lot of momentum coming into the season, having just come up short in defending its first ever Bundesliga title. Arsenal beat Leverkusen 2-0 on aggregate, which led to the German side exiting the competition without much fanfare in the end.

Arsenal showed that they could deal with physical and high energy European competition with ease. Declan Rice in particular stood out during both games, breaking up attacks and picking the right moments to drive forward powerfully.

Sporting CP in the Quarter Finals

Many people saw Arsenal as getting the most favourable quarter final draw, getting Sporting Lisbon. They’re currently third in the Portuguese league, so it hasn’t been the most inspiring this season for the team.

They still put in a gritty display, with Arsenal only progressing 1-0 on aggregate across the two legs. Bukayo Saka came up with the crucial goal as he started to regain form after some injury issues. This win also meant that Arsenal was unbeaten in 12 games in Europe, an impressive feat.

A Semi-Final Grind Against Atletico Madrid

It was this result that showcased that Arsenal have the mettle to perform at the highest level, something that has always been questioned about Mikel Arteta’s side as they have yet to take home a major piece of silverware. They ruthlessly handled Atletico Madrid over the course of two legs. They grinded out a 1-1 draw in the Metropolitano and then secured a 1-0 win at home with Bukayo Saka once again getting the pivotal goal.

Diego Simeone’s team are known for making teams uncomfortable and stifling space. However, Arsenal didn’t crumble and absorbed all of the pressure with apparent calmness. The unbeaten streak is now the club’s longest in its long history. Arteta was elated at having his team perform well on the biggest of nights to return to the Champions League final for the first time since 2006.

All to Play For

Arsenal had the luxury of securing their place in the final a day before PSG took on Bayern Munich. It’s two decades since they last graced the final, which was also the only time they’ve gotten to that point in the modern era. There was clear emotion among Arsenal fans when the full-time whistle went against Atletico. North London was bouncing, also helped by the struggles of age-old rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

PSG are a daunting task up next, as they are the defending champions and applying an impressive collective brand of football under Luis Enrique. There are no big egos in the team, with everyone willing to work hard for each other.

Their tactical flexibility also means that they’re a good match for Arsenal. PSG has scored 44 times during the current European campaign, so there is plenty of firepower. Winning back-to-back Champions League titles would make them one of the competition’s great teams.

The odds currently reflect PSG’s experience and attacking threat. However, Arsenal will be able to use their physicality and organisation to give them a real battle in Budapest. They’ve shown right throughout the competition that nothing phases them, so all eyes will be on the big game on May 30 to see who ultimately comes out on top.

The Tactical Battle

The final offers one of the most interesting contrasts of style that we’ve seen in a final for many years. PSG are the most attacking-focused team at the business end of the competition, while Arsenal have built their success from a firm foundation at the back, trying to nick goals from counterattacks and set pieces. Despite that, Arsenal’s shots on target average per game efficiency is much better than their counterparts.

Luis Enrique will likely look to press high up the pitch and use his fast wide forwards to try to get overloads. Arteta will be more selective with when his team will press and try to hit PSG on the counter when they’re more exposed.

One player who is worth watching is Viktor Gyokeres, as he’s scored five times in the competition this season and is fast becoming the focal point in Arsenal’s attack. The Swedish striker will be key in linking the play in the final and his efficient finishing in the box could be the difference on May 30. Fans are now planning their trip to Budapest and hoping that their team will claim victory. Whichever team comes out on top, it will be a historic day for them.
