Rangers fans rip into Neil Lennon’s claim on Steven Gerrard over success

Rangers fans rip into former Celtic boss Neil Lennon‘s claim on the manager of Scottish Premiership champions Steven Gerrard over success.

The Gers have just won their 55th top-flight title, and at the same time, we saw the departure of Lennon who couldn’t guide the Bhoys to a 10th Scottish Premiership title in a row.

Months later, Neil Lennon have linked up with various media to give his thoughts and versions of events, now it’s time for the subject matter to be Rangers.

Neil Lennon snaps at Sky Sports reporter as Celtic boss responds to 'devil's advocate' reply - Daily Record

He says their boss Steven Gerrard shouldโ€™ve won more trophies and was given more time than other managers, and now supporters are calling him bitter.

It’s the only trophy the Liverpool legend has won during his three years at Ibrox, but arguably the most important league triumph in Rangers’ history.

While Lennon recognises their transformation under Gerrard, the ex-Parkhead boss believes his former Old Firm rival was afforded more time than other managers would have.

He told talkSPORT: “I think he’s done a good job, yeah.

“He’s won the league under a lot of pressure, which we all were.

“We know in Glasgow that we have to win.

“Steven maybe hasn’t won as many trophies as he would have liked but he’s done what he has set out to do.

“I think he maybe got a bit longer than some managers would have done.

“But he’s got Rangers into a good position now.”

After being questioned if he was given more time because of his name, Lennon added: “I don’t know Jim, you’ll have to answer that.”

While Gerrard’s Premiership Invincibles finished the season 25 points clear of Celtic, Lennon insists the champions won’t have it so easy this year.

New Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou is set to take training at Lennoxtown for the first time this week and has been tasked with rebuilding the Parkhead based club.

But Lennon said: “I think it will be close this season.

“First of all, they’ve got to sort out who wants to stay and who wants to go.

“Obviously there are four or five there who want to move on and then they’ve got to get the recruitment process sorted out as well.

“I think once they get the quality of players in that can be expected to challenge in Scotland, I think they will be alright.

“I don’t think it will be as bad as everybody is making out.

“Hopefully, we’ll get a few fans in next season as well. I think that was a huge loss to a club like Celtic.

“I think financially they are okay. There’s not the pot of money that was there before the pandemic hit but I think financially they are still in a strong position.

“Obviously, the Champions League games come very, very early. If they could make that then the whole season opens up.

“But if not, I think they will still try to win the league and I don’t see any reason why they can’t.”
