QPR fans demand a refund while some took to praise Gareth Ainsworth for his post-match interview after suffering 6-1 loss at Blackpool.
The Seasiders hopes of avoiding relegation to the Championship got a much needed boost by absolutely tearing Queens Park Rangers apart, picking up their first league win since October.
Within 15 minutes, the hosts found themselves 3-0 ahead with Curtis Nelson, Andy Lyons, and Jerry Yates all getting on the scoresheet.
Jordan Thorniley netted a fourth goal on 36 minutes, before Chris Martin grabbed a goal back for QPR just before the break. Lyons however added his second goal of the night to make it 5-1 and then Kenny Dougall scored a sixth late in the game to send the home fans happier than they expected.
Gareth Ainsworth said he felt ‘gutted for the fans’ after seeing his QPR side beaten 6-1 at Blackpool on Tuesday evening.
“I am disappointed with the boys today and they know in no uncertain terms because I have just told them,” Ainsworth said.
“For the fans, I am absolutely gutted. A lot of them have travelled up today and will be getting home in the early hours of the morning with absolutely nothing to shout about.
“I want to say sorry and I will be working hard to put this right.”
Asked what was going through his head after being on the receiving end of a six-goal haul for the first time in his managerial career, Ainsworth said: “Defend set pieces is what is going through my head right now.
“I thought we were incredibly poor at set plays. We can’t defend like that if we want to win games.
“I thought Blackpool defended their box superbly well. We didn’t get free headers like they did in our box. I am really disappointed with the nature of the goals, it’s just not good enough.”
After the manner of his team’s display in the weekend win over Watford, the R’s chief admitted what happened at Bloomfield Road took him completely by surprise.
“The whole performance I didn’t see coming,” he said. “We were sensational on Saturday against Watford, a real workmanlike, difficult-to-beat performance but today we looked like a team that was worried.
“Nearly three weeks in, I’ve got to really do some work with these boys because that just isn’t good enough.
“I made five subs in the second half and I have got boys on the bench there thinking what have they got to do to get in the team.
“I’m learning plenty about this squad. It is going to be a lot of work but I never said the challenge was too big.
“I am going to take on this challenge head on like I take on every challenge.
“It was not good enough and we have got a big game on Saturday against Birmingham where we need to put it right.”
“We’ve started well in most games here but never got the goal and today we did. It was great for Jerry (Yates) who has been much talked about,” Blackpool’s Mick McCarthy said.
“On Saturday when it was mentioned about having not scored in 19 games, yes but he has worked his socks off. I said I wonder how many passes he’s had that he could actually finish, I wonder how many chances he’s actually had created?
“He put that penalty away with style and I always think if you do that and you put it in the top corner it lifts the crowd, which it did.
“We’ve been at the thin end of that wedge me and TC being 4-1 up at half time at Derby years ago and they came out immediately and scored after half time and we ended up drawing 4-4, if that had gone on another five minutes we’d have lost the game.
“I did mention that, if you concede they suddenly have their tails up. We had to do it again, replicating that performance, have a scrap with them for ten minutes and the two centre forwards ran them into corners and it worked.
“Then we got the fifth and there was no coming back after that.
“I matched them up because I anticipated they would play the same team, having won against Watford. We matched them up with two more attacking wing backs than full backs and they really did some damage.
“I thought CJ (Hamilton) and Andy Lyons were excellent. I told them to go and play up as a front four and if they get it they had to drop back and defend but they should be up the pitch causing problems to stretch them. They were very good today.
“I’ve just said you don’t want up and down performances. You’re not going to do that again on Saturday, forget that one, Coventry are going for the play-offs and they’re a better side than QPR so it’s a different game, different set of circumstances but it’ll be nice to have the same performance.”
As mentioned, QPR fans demand a refund while some praise the Gareth Ainsworth interview after Tuesday’s 6-1 loss at Blackpool…
@MeNobodyElse1: Can’t fault Gareth for his honesty. Shocking from start to finish, he can’t say it publicly but he knows the team are simply not good enough and must be wishing he had stayed at Wycombe
@SamGrahamss: Sitting in my hotel thinking why did I bother going tonight
@OscarQPR1: Refund the fans
@robye46: Fair play Gaffer!!! Now we dig even DEEPER, lift heads HIGHER and bring our A-GAME in a season defining SIX POINTER against Birmingham!!! #COYRs 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
@adam_bucky: QPR has too much effect on my mental health 😂 luckily not in a serious way. I’m 43, slow (always been slow) slightly overweight but still playing vets football. Those 2 goals from corners wouldn’t happen if I was on the pitch, amateur, the guy didn’t even jump for the 2nd #QPR
@maljacqpr: Will he arrange a refund to all the 414 fans that travelled to Blackpool? 🙁 #QPR
@ShortenMCLtd: Genuine thanks to the gaffer, Gareth Ainsworth, for being open, honest and frank about the QPR team performance tonight. We all know it was awful and adds pressure to Saturday’s home game vs. Birmingham. We need the players showing the same honesty – but on the pitch.
@miles_qpr: Ain’t his fault at all. Owners were under serious pressure before he came in. That is the reason they Brought him in. To sugar coat the mess they have put us is in.
@jay_warman: He said all the right things
@prawncurry25: The game also showed supporters a lot about Ainsworth tactical abilities…. 3-0 down in first 15, yes they were mistakes but we didn’t have a midfield, and Drewe was getting murdered down the right.
@itisjbakes: No sugarcoating fucking lay into these mugs. Really hope Chair, Paal and Laird are fit soon.
@Shonagh_25: Refreshing to see a manager react like the fans. Said it when Gareth was appointed, the problems we have at the club can not be solved by one man alone and those slagging him off already? I get it was shit performance but he’s had a handful of weeks in a league he’s not used to.
@dhunter1993: The best thing the club could do is sack les and Ramsey and get warburton in as dof
@Kelly_QPR: I’m glad there’s no sugar coating from Gaz. Hope he gives them absolute hell.
@mjwhoopsa: Lot of us still on our way home! Totally unacceptable performance.
@jacknichols82: When will the refunds be issued guys?
