A punter wins £18k from placing a non league bet after witnessing a 87th minute winner to secure the fan a big win in October.
A delighted National League follower scooped up £18,000 from an 11-fold accumulator which was priced as an incredible 4255/1 long-shot during the Premier League international break.
Harry Clifton scored three minutes left of the 90 for Grimsby Town against Woking to tick off the final leg of the astonishing prediction, and the person behind the bet hadn’t even risked his own cash.
Using a free bet, the Spanish-based Betway customer predicted wins for Chesterfield, Barnet, Stockport, Solihull, Eastleigh, Notts County, Halifax, Boreham Wood, Altrincham, Bromley and of course Grimsby.
THE RESULTS:
Altrincham (0) 2-0 (0) Maidenhead United
Bromley (2) 2-0 (0) Torquay United
Dover Athletic (0) 1-2 (1) Barnet
FC Halifax Town (1) 2-0 (0) Weymouth
King’s Lynn Town (0) 0-1 (0) Solihull Moors
Southend United (0) 0-4 (2) Chesterfield
Stockport County (1) 1-0 (0) Aldershot Town
Wealdstone (0) 1-2 (1) Eastleigh
Woking (0) 0-1 (0) Grimsby Town
Yeovil Town (0) 0-2 (1) Notts County
The Mariners went into their 9th of October clash sitting top of the table, and dominated fantastically finding the breakthrough until Clifton took a touch and fired past Craig Ross.
His €21,269 prize works out at just shy of £18,000, with the 4,255/1 almost as far fetched as Leicester going on to become champions of the Premier League title back in 2015/16.
That marks an even more impressive return than when a punter turned £10 into £17,000 back in September, despite an early scare after high-flyers Manchester City went behind to Wycombe Wanderers in the Carabao Cup.
Back in 2015, William Hill lost a total of £2.2million after having to pay out £3.3m to punters who had backed Leicester’s triumph at 5000/1 – despite there being only 25 to back it before the season started.
Joe Crilly, William Hill spokesman, said at the time: “There will have been wild celebrations up and down the country from Foxes fans and punters alike.
“Despite losing a fair wedge of cash on Leicester… their story this season has been fantastic and we can’t begrudge them this win.
“It will also serve to galvanise interest next season as we expect fans of some of the Premier League’s ‘less fashionable’ sides will think 16/17 will be their year.”
Since then we have seen the following teams crowned champions Chelsea (16/17), Man City, (17/18), Man City (18/19), Liverpool (19/20) and of course, Man City again (20/21).
Brighton have been the surprise package at this early stage of the 2021/22 season, taking 15 points from eight games played so far, and just four points behind the league leaders Chelsea.
