Preston boss hits out at “crazy refereeing” after tempers boil over in defeat to West Brom

Preston boss Paul Heckingbottom hits out at “crazy refereeing” after tempers boil over in his side’s 3-1 defeat to West Brom.

Heckingbottom highlighted several incidents during the game that he believed were mismanaged by Madley, including a lack of red cards for West Brom players and questionable decisions regarding fouls and restarts.

He notably mentioned an instance where Preston’s Emil Riis was shoved over the advertising boards by Kyle Bartley, leading to a goal kick for West Brom despite the ball still being in play.

Madley spoke to both players handed Bartley a yellow card, with a furious Heckingbottom made his way over from the bench to make his views known.

The result meant West Brom sit 6th in the Championship table with 39 points from 25 games played, while Preston are 16th with 29 points.

The North End boss said: “I saw one of my players get shoved over the advertising boards.

“But my frustration was more with Bobby and his performance, I went to see him. There was crazy stuff I saw here from Bobby. It was mental.

“Emil kept the ball in, got shoved over the boards, Bobby blew the whistle, spoke to the players, then gave West Brom a goal kick.

“There’s been massive home performances from officials this season. We got four yellows, they got one.

“There could’ve been two reds – one was a 100 per cent red. Frustrations boil up in you when you’re on the wrong side of them.

“There seems to be a pattern – I’ve told them they need to be looking at it.”

West Brom defender Kyle Bartley faces retrospective punishment for pushing Preston’s Emil Riis over the advertising hoardings on New Year’s Day, according to Keith Hackett, saying he firmly believes that Bobby Madley should have shown Bartley a straight red card because booking him was nowhere near a fitting punishment for such a dangerous incident.

“Wow. This is outrageous,” Hackett told West Brom News.

“The referee should not have hesitated in issuing a red card for this offence.

“This is violent conduct and with no action taken the Football Authorities must take retrospective action against this player.

Paul Heckingbottom on the game: “The goals we conceded were shocking and that’s what gave the game away. We gave them three goals. The three goals were terrible. They punished us and defended better than us.

“It’s just frustrating. I would have liked West Brom to have had to work harder than that. And I’m certainly going to look at our approach away from home.

“I get so frustrated because they’re better than what they’re showing but at the minute it seems only I think that. I want to be a good force away from home as well.

“It sounds like I’m hammering the players but I’m not. It’s just something I don’t want to see happen.”

West Bromwich Albon joint caretaker-boss Chris Brunt told BBC Radio WM: “We got the goals in the first half, then defended it well in the second half, when Preston came at us. There were a lot of tired old legs out there.

“It was good to back up the second-half performance against Sheffied United. But the intensity was always guaranteed to drop just purely based on the schedule. This period of games is a nightmare as a player.

“It’s a hard old slog at this time of the season and you just have to manage it the best you can. The boys that came off the bench did well and we saw the game out which was important

“I’m not sure what the script is from above but we’ll just keep plodding away until we’re told otherwise.”

Fans reacted as the Preston boss hits out at “crazy refereeing” after tempers boil over in the defeat to West Brom…

@pne09: What a prick Bartley is. And Madley is a bigger one for allowing him to stay on the pitch. Fucking joke.

@TomHarrisonLaw: Nevermind a red….. It’s a criminal offence!!!!!!

@pnefc33: Hope the fa look at this as violent conduct and have him suspended. Absolutely ridiculous. #pnefc

@pom0021: This is dangerous play…. Referee failed. In his “highly paid” role of managing the well being of the players….

@heal1979: Lucky boy, we thought he was gone.

@LewisStubbs1302: Even the West Brom fans who witnessed it there looked shocked. Awful decision from the ref to not send Bartley off.

@Jasey_B_DCFC: Should’ve got a Red

@Lordalty: Useless ref, he can’t make a correct decision even with VAR so without it he has no chance

@SamJayne11: Red card for me. Madley hates us, surprised he even gave a yellow

@AndrewSlaughte1: Red all day long that, no need at all for the final push over the boards. Bartley knows he’s got away with one there.

@kimramshead: Poor performance from us especially 1st half but the ref was against us! How Bartley didn’t get a red for shoving riis over the hoardings is beyond me! #pnefc

@grogan6: Didn’t someone get sent for something similar other week? Then the extra push? He was a bad bad ref today

@SamY4t35: Not at all to blame for the result cause we were shit, but what an abhorrent reffing performance that was

@matty_1880: Baffling decision, stupidly dangerous and deserved a ban.

@ReeceNuttall_: he’s swindled the ref there with a big smile and an arm around Riis, red all day that

@Cesca_LB: The girl’s face behind bless her 😂

@PNEste25: It’s serious foul play and should have been a red but hardly surprising given the refs performance he was abysmal all game

@_N47H4N: Do the commentators have eyes? Riis is clearly pulling Bartley’s shirt and him towards the byline before Bartley puts two hands on him, yes Bartley gives him a shove and he ends up over the boards but they are both as bad as each other in the exchange in terms of the fouling #WBA

@catterallwhite: The only yellow Madley gave against them all day. We didn’t even get a free kick for that and yes it’s dangerous play, so a red all day.

@ajplaskett1: Standard of refereeing is atrocious
