Prescot Cables chairman Tony Zeverona resigns after abusive threats to him, his family, board and director Richard Tigwell.
It’s been quite the week for the 7th tier club, in which it saw an open letter issued to fans, explaining the ‘turmoil’ suffered this week and have since quickly found a new manager after initial concern for newly promoted side when they saw the managerial team and several players leave.
Manager Ste Daley and assistant Peter Cumiskey parted ways on Monday with news then coming that their pre-season friendly against Marine for less than 24 hours later was being cancelled.
Burscough then announced in the early hours of Wednesday morning that manager Dave Dempsey and his Assistant Chris Stammers have left for Prescot.
They tweeted: “Prescot Cables can confirm that Chairman Tony Zeverona has resigned from his position.
“We strongly condemn the personal abuse aimed at Tony over the course of the week.
“Tony’s involvement with PCFC lasts over 25yrs in many roles and we thank him for his dedication to the club.”
Former player, manager and vice chairman Joe Gibiliru has now become their new chairman. And on Friday, a surprise U-turn saw Ste Daley confirmed he was rejoining as their manager. What a truly crazy week!

Richard Tigwell also said in a statement via Twitter: “For clarification, since the events of Monday night at Prescot Cables Football Club, the club chairman, myself and other directors have been subjected to a relentless campaign of abuse, false accusations and in some cases threats.
“As a result one board member has resigned, the club Chairman has tendered his resignation.
“I have also signaled my intention to resign from the board and step away from the club all together unless action is taken to reassure me about mine, and more importantly, my wife and childrens safety.
“Thus far, these actions have not been forthcoming.
“I believe that people responsible for for this campaign of intimidation have been given extremely selective bits of confidential club information in order to paint certain individuals in a bad light, while taking the spot light off others actions and behaviour.
“This has to stop now.
“My kids go to school in the borough.
“Their safety is now at risk.
“I live, work and socialise in the town yet I no longer feel safe.
“The club will, as it always does, hold an AGM within the timescales legally set out out by the CIC regulator and within league guidelines.
“Should these people who believe we are the issue wish to take the reigns, I’ll support their election to the board.
“This isn’t ‘Championship Manager’, ‘Ted Lasso’, ‘Dream Team’ or even ‘Footballers Wives’.
“We are responsible for a community asset, that goes beyond the 11 players that pull on the Amber and Black on a Saturday.
“We would love to chase the dream but the reality is, we have a responsibility to to community as a whole to be more responsible.
“I sincerely hope that the club can resolve the issues. The individuals responsible for this campaign stop feeding lies to feed their own agendas and things can settle down.”

Concern for newly promoted Prescot Cables as managerial team and players leave amid ‘turmoil’
Prescot Cables issue open letter to fans, explaining ‘turmoil’ and quickly appoint new manager
This is how fans reacted as the Prescot Cables chairman resigns after abusive threats made to him, his family, board members and the director…
@driversimond: A bigger loss to the club than any manager or player could ever be…
@CablesJFC: Terrible news to see. Tony gave his all for the club and shame it’s come to this.
People running the club are volunteers, they do it for no financial gain, but to make sure the local community has a club to be proud of and somewhere families can enjoy time together of a weekend
@amandamanning8: Sorry to read and hear the going on’s this week . Horrendous . But remember this same chairman and board got the club promoted this season . Enjoy your well earned retirement and your beautiful new granddaughter – the important and most rewarding part of life !
@DouseGeoff: As a Linnets fan I find the whole situation at Cables very sad. Agreat season ends up with all these issues. As we know social media has created a place for the less well balanced and unreasonably minded to castigate unpaid volunteers who do more for the club than they ever will.
@pwgray: What a shame! Anyone who puts in over 25 years service to a club shouldn’t be hounded out!
@Euro6times: Some people have short memories or weren’t near the club when Tony and other volunteers were keeping the club in business. I hope he reconsiders and there’s a way back for him. He’s a great fella as well. Wouldn’t blame him if he stuck with his decision though.
@Doctor_Scrumpy: Incredibly sad news.
@BlueBren: Incredibly sad.
@stanjkcables: How sad it has come to this….
@SPGPrescot: Proper decent fella is Tony.
@alanfhlp: Sad 😔
@stuartmac25: Sad to hear. Volunteers and clubmen like Tony will never be replaced. He made me feel very welcome in the short spell I was there. Enjoy your break and rest Tony!
@RobertT56763364: Great fella give so much time and effort to the club full of shit houses hiding behind social media having ago of a older fella jokers
@GarethECoates: Thanks for all you’ve done for the club, Tony, through good times and bad. There’s no justification for personal abuse and anyone who knew the club’s history wouldn’t stoop so low.
@Jess_Isabelle: This shouldn’t be happening! There should be no room for abuse driving people away from a club they’ve volunteered in for years. It’s an old quote but if you haven’t got anything nice to say don’t say nothing at all. Thank you Tony and Lorraine for all you’ve done 🖤💛
@sthsportnetwork: Tony has been an amazing servant to cables for years. Circumstances change overnight sometimes and clubs have to cut their cloth accordingly. The abuse aimed at good people within non league football is disgusting. Makes you wonder why people bother. 🤦♂️
@WhiteRoseScouse: All the best Tony. A heartbeat of the club for the whole time I’ve been going. Sad and pathetic situation for a small but noisy and vindictive minority to have created. Of course, they could fill some of the huge number of volunteer hours going up in smoke. But they won’t.
@SteH90: Shocking behaviour. It’s not the Premier League, spending more than you bring in isn’t wise, there wouldn’t be a club there if they did. Obviously, the budget issue didn’t work out as they’d hoped but they’ve acted to maintain the club as an ongoing thing only to receive abuse.
@pcollis1989: Disgusting the way Tony and a others have been treated this week. All volunteers who give their all for the club whilst having full time jobs. Biggest budget the club has ever had and a few sad bastards who don’t have a clue about the situation have verbally hounded him.
@LawrenceDunne3: Tony is one of the nicest fellas you could ever wish to meet. I know that he was doing his absolute best to make next season successful, amidst some huge financial challenges. It’s such a shame that he has been driven out like this.
@james83duxbury: Great fella. Sad that it’s come to this with everything he’s done for the club over the years
