Premier League push for Leicester to be given ‘BIG points deduction as punishment’

The Premier League reportedly push for Leicester to be given a ‘BIG points deduction as punishment’ for a spending breach.

Leicester face charges and a potential points deduction for an alleged breach of the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability regulations (PSR) in the 2022-23 season, in which the club were relegated.

Had they avoided the drop, they would pretty much be in the same situation as Everton and Nottingham Forest, both of whom was referred to an independent commission over a PSR breach and are at risk of losing more points.

Everton, already being given a 10-point deduction, now reduced to six points, relating to a PSR breach from the reporting period ending in 2021-22, while Forest’s sanction is looming.

On Wednesday, a statement was issued, with Leicester at risk of a PSR breach for 2023/24, despite an independent panel ruling they don’t have to submit a business plan to the EFL, but could still avoid this second breach if they are able to reduce their losses by selling players in June.

The Telegraph report that Leicester City are anticipating to receive a charge from the Premier League this month for an alleged violation of financial controls and also may face a significant deduction of points.

The reason behind the delay in imposing the sanction comes with Leicester’s relegation last May coming before the introduction of new regulations at the Premier League’s AGM after the conclusion of the previous season.

In that meeting, all 20 clubs and the newly promoted ones, agreed that any breaches of profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) must be resolved within the same season in which the relevant accounts are submitted.

Telegraph Sport have ‘information’ that if Leicester stayed in the Premier League for the 2023/24 season, they would have been obligated to submit their accounts by the 31st of December in order to complete the process on time.

But now that the club’s audited accounts for 2022-23 have just been submitted, it’s thought that if Leicester were still in the top flight, they would have faced a similar punishment to that of Everton and Nottingham Forest.

Leicester still face potential charge from the EFL for allegedly exceeding the permitted losses of £83 million over a three-year period with the Premier League also ‘recommending a substantial points deduction as a penalty’, which would be a big blow. An independent commission will preside over Leicester’s case, with confirmation of Leicester’s charge in coming weeks.

Leicester boss Enzo Maresca spoke ahead of this weekend’s game at Hull: “I am being told the same that you can read everywhere. In this moment, it’s not something I am paying attention to.

“I think we have to be focused. At the same time, it’s something we don’t like but we have 10 more games and that’s the most important thing for us. In the next days, weeks, we will see what happens. It’s something I can’t control.”

Fans have given their reaction to reports that Premier League are looking to push for Leicester to be given a ‘BIG points deduction as punishment’…

@IanBurt71719238: Have sold our top players for years. Didn’t go overboard when giving it a go in Europe a couple of times. Sold all our top players when relegated. The rules are a joke. How dare any club try to unsettle the elite. Take the deduction if we get promoted and go for it.

@LHolden619: Can’t be anymore than 6 points. The precedent has been set now with Everton.

@RS_Gpx: So we’re getting charged by a league we’re not even in.. Say we don’t go up.. does the charge just “dissolve”. And what happened to us not buying anyone during this time to avoid just this?! I’m confused!

@kingpowers: “Big points deduction” what’s the point in even going up? I’ve completely lost motivation for it this season after all this.

@meredithlcfc: Better to have a big points deduction in the premier league rather than the championship. Especially if there’s going to be a couple more clubs starting on minus

@bradleykendrick: This is getting silly now. Whilst we were shit last season, other teams around us being punished for breaking rules but not at a time where its impacted other clubs who ultimately went down

@trickyterra2: Wait what? 🤣🤣🤣 ok so break rules and charged in same period as other teams but sanction in different seasons… PSR process really is the definition of not fit for purpose… total farce…

@lewjt11: This is getting stupid now. Everton, Forest, Leicester getting points deductions for spending (relatively) modest sums. While the Super League 6 can pretty much spend what they want with no issue. Time to scrap it and bring in a fixed spending cap that applies to everyone equally

@joetmatherton: So they cheat in the premier league and contribute to Leeds getting relegated. They cheat in the EFL and potentially contribute to Leeds not being promoted. So of course any punishment is implemented in seasons in which it doesn’t help or impact Leeds in any way. Makes sense.

@Craig74Nov: Obviously I’m no Leicester fan, But this is getting silly now.

@mattyfromle: Look. It’s done. Seagrave doesn’t count towards PSR apparently. We should have done things differently. We didn’t. We’re here now, all we can do is learn from it and hold those responsible accountable. It wouldn’t be Leicester if it wasn’t excruciating. #lcfc

@De_mo_lee: Just buy players in the summer and they’ll deduct 10 points at most we should just ignore whatever they do and move on trying to comply with FFP is part of what got us relegated so we should just sign whatever players we want to #LCFC
