Police issue a statement after fans riot in London following France’s World Cup win over Morocco on Thursday night (9 July).
Second half goals from Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele sealed France’s place into the semi final, where they will play either Spain or Belgium in Dallas on Tuesday.
But footage has since surfaced on social media of clashes between fans and police on Edgware Road in west London, arrests made and an officer taken to hospital.
@zonjy_ explained what was going on with updates on Twitter: “Morocco fans started already blocked road in Edgware Road London.
“People ran away from dangerous fireworks. Riot in London Edgware Road, one police officer down, got rushed to hospital I hope he survived, police officers got chased by Moroccans.
“One police officer down got hit on his head. “Fans chased police officer who ain’t got riot gears or protective shields.
“Edgware Road. more anti riot police deployed.
“Moroccans fans shout Islamic slogans.
“Moroccans fans and also Pakistani flag were seen.
“Car tyres burnout, drivers caught tyres to burn in the street of London where you see smokes flame.”
In a statement, a Metropolitan Police spokesperson said, as per London Evening Standard: “One officer has been injured, and four people have been arrested following disorder in Edgware Road.
“Officers were initially called after a group of people congregated in the road and blocked traffic. The incident then escalated with the group throwing bottles and setting off fireworks. As a result, further officers were deployed to the area.
“One officer was taken to hospital for head injuries, it is believed he had been hit by a glass bottle. No other injuries were reported. Officers remained in the area and made four arrests for violent disorder, with the group dispersing and the road re-opened from around 01:00hrs.
“We will not tolerate such disorder on our streets, or attacks on our officers. A police presence will remain in the area overnight and we will be reviewing CCTV and video footage circulating on social media to ensure all those responsible are brought to justice.”

Meanwhile, it’s also reported by NL Times that riot police had to intervene over in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague.
Thousands of police officers were out across France over fears of possible riots prepared for chaotic scenes, similar to the disorder seen after PSG won the Champions League earlier this year.

Social media users gave their reaction as police issue statement after fans riot in London following France’s World Cup win over Morocco…
@NormanBrennan: You don’t get this👇 moronic behaviour after rugby matches; I hope the MET have lots of good quality video of those causing Violent Disorder Affray & Assault on the police; absolutely moronic wankers!!👇🤷♂️🙄
@Leader_WCC: Deeply disturbed by scenes of crowd disorder on the Edgware Road after last night’s World Cup results. Completely unacceptable that @metpoliceuk officers appear to have been turned on & one officer injured. I appeal to all fans to be respectful throughout the tournament.
Cllr Elliot Keck (@ElliotKeck): As councillor for Hyde Park, covering the Edgware Road, I am horrified to see the barbaric display from certain Moroccan fans last night, which has led to a police officer being hospitalised. I call on @ShabanaMahmood to ensure that all of those involved in the violence are arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law and to deport any who are not British citizens and bar them from the UK permanently. I will be engaging with the council to see if any of those involved live in social housing, in which case they should be evicted. Enough of the lawlessness on our streets simply due to a football match
@theashrb: I honestly do not understand this “riot” in Edgware Road lol
