Police investigate after commentator ‘PUNCHED’ as Wrexham lose to Grimsby

Police are to investigate after a commentator was allegedly ‘PUNCHED’ as Wrexham went on to lose to Grimsby in the playoff semi final.

Grimsby Town secured another dramatic extra time win to cause a huge blow to Wrexham’s hopes of finally getting promoted from the National League.

Paul Mullin’s penalty gave Wrexham the lead but John McAtee levelled, only for Luke Waterfall to put Grimsby ahead.

Ben Tozer and Mullin made it 3-2, before Ryan Taylor and Mani Dieseruvwe restored Grimsby’s advantage, but Jordan Davies equalised to make it 4-4 and take it into extra time.

Waterfall netted a 119th-winner for Grimsby, who had beaten Notts County in extra-time in the play-off eliminator in midweek.

Grimsby now take on Solihull Moors in the final at West Ham’s London Stadium on Sunday, the 5th of June.

John Tondeur, a Grimsby supporter, was working for the BBC at the Racecourse Ground as the Welsh outfit were beaten 5-4 after extra-time in a thrilling fifth tier clash.

But after the final whistle, the radio broadcaster tweeted: “Well probably the most exciting game I’ve ever commentated on and certainly the first time I’ve been punched while commentating!

“For those asking I’m absolutely fine but only because the perpetrator wasn’t a great shot.

“A report will go to Wrexham if only to stop it happening again.

“A shame because both sets of fans were brilliant.”

He then told BBC Sport: “It was a completely isolated incident and I won’t let it spoil the memory of a brilliant football match.

“Wrexham is a fantastic football club with good staff and fans and I look forward to visiting again – hopefully with both clubs in the Football League.”

North Wales Police confirmed they had received a report of an alleged assault on a radio commentator and now the authorities are appealing for witnesses.

A club spokesman for Wrexham said: “We have acted swiftly to gather as much information as we can, and have passed it to North Wales Police, who we will work closely with on this matter.”
