Playing out from the back NIGHTMARE as Bolton Wanderers gift an unbelievably easy goal in their big defeat to Huddersfield Town.
The Terriers took advantage of Bolton’s insistence of playing out from the back when Anthony Evans intercepted a pass from Trotters keeper Nathan Baxter.
Footage of Huddersfield’s fourth goal of the game quickly went viral on social media, getting over 7 million views in less than 24 hours, with Bolton fans frustrated at how careless their side were being.

“The minute we lost that final at Wembley I’ve just felt in and out of the club a huge negative energy”

“Our decision-making is completely off, and as I said, that comes from the negativity we are all feeling now.

“It was everything we’re not as a team,” said Bolton’s Ian Evatt.
“Everything was against what we’ve built, everything against what I stand for and what I am as a person, so it’s hard to take. I think it’s confidence. I think ever since we lost that final, there’s such negative energy around everything and everywhere.
“At the moment I’m trying to find the answers to shift it and clearly haven’t found them. It’s just keep working, keep fighting, keep trying to improve, keep searching for the right answers.
“I’ve come a long way with this football club in over four years now. We’ve had a lot of good times, but this is the toughest. That was the toughest to view, even from the start of the League Two campaign. I’ve never stood here and felt like I do now.
“We’ve got to be a lot, lot better than that. That is very disappointing and not what we’ve created here. We’ll all take a long hard look at ourselves and see what happens next.
“I’m distraught, I’m devastated, I’m hurt. I’m always determined, always have been, always will be. I’ve had a tough journey in my life and been through some really difficult things and come through them.
“This is as tough as it gets but I’ve been prepared for it all my life, so we’ll go away think about what we do next.”

Huddersfield boss Michael Duff said, per Bolton News: “I thought we were excellent,” said Duff. “We have been asking for a complete performance and that is probably as close as you will get, definitely the closest we have had from minute one.
“They are a strong team and I thought probably up until the first goal, it was nip and tuck. We had the better of it but without either side being dominant.
“We took over second half and looked really solid defensively, moved the ball, scored different types of goals.
“Overall, you are always going to be pleased with 4-0 at Bolton but I thought we thoroughly deserved it.
“I think Anthony Evans’ goal tells you everything. We are winning the game and have four or five men in their penalty area because they are still trying to play out.
“What we don’t want is we go a couple of goals up, just sit on the edge of our box and hope to survive.
“I don’t think we did that against Rotherham but, subliminally, that is what we did and we spent the whole game defending.
“You end up losing anyway so you might as well get on the front foot, get them as far away from our goal as possible with the way we crunch the pitch.”
Twitter users reacted to the playing out from the back NIGHTMARE as Bolton gift am easy goal in their big defeat to Huddersfield…
@CameronJeromeFC: Roy Keane would fucking love this
@youreddddsss: Thought you were the best team in the league
@GkDevelopment1: Just put your foot through it the art of that has gone got to make better decisions and choices there
@jamieneedham_: Let’s not forget they won the “best football in league one” cup last year…….
@Andreww85373323: Why are lower league teams trying to play like man city stick to what ya do best and what’s got you were you are today
@AntSSimo19: Managers deserve to be sacked when employing ridiculous tactics like this with L1 footballers. Where the GK is drilled to the degree where he’s still playing out in the face of this. Has Ian Evatt gone yet? #BWFC
@NormyNico87: This playing out from back nonsense works if you’re Man City, genuinely don’t know why teams (including mine) try and do it when they are shit 🤣 @philhirstgreen
@TomHayden_: This is why footballs become woke, clear your lines
@nthnl04: Don’t think I’ve ever been more bewildered at a football game before. Never seen owt like it #htafc
@TescoSam1: Left the ground before I could see this goal. What a pathetic group of lads these are
@DominikJames_: Football is ruined, lower league teams trying to play from out the back – just hoof it up and see if you can get a goal
@DavidLynch93: No one is ever convincing me this is the “right way to play” it’s absolutely criminal.
@jamleeroberts: Can EFL clubs stop playing out from the 6-yard box. It’s getting stupid now. Wycombe also caught out today with Northampton’s goal. Even Southampton in the Prem look embarrassing doing it.
@3jan03: absolutely unreal watch. made my entire week.
@hashtagwilbert: Playing out from the back is wonderful, but at 3 nil down at home, with 3 or 4 opposition players in your own box, just put your foot through it. Even man City, liverpool, arsenal etc go long when they have to.
@chrisj_1982: Sooner this nonsense is a thing of the past the better. Teams of bang average players trying to do something they’re nowhere near good enough to do.
@BradMcG8: Actually abysmal 😂😂
@j_floyd97: Am fumin me, as much as evatt is at fault so are the shite player we have on the pitch none of them deserve a wage, muppets
@dcfcstephen: Tell you what, the best team in League One last season are looking good.
@TrottersBlog: All a cause of how Evatt wants us to play. Dog shit.
@19LC92: I know it’s not, but it’s that bad that it looks intentional.
@GarethParry: Modern football in a nutshell! Pep’s fault
@Billy_curnock: Someone needs to show this to Roy Keane asap
@MBSF155: Baxter was shite in net for Bolton he was on floor b4 penalty was even taken, should of saved the 3rd goal & gives away the 4th with crap pass here
@JK_dcfc: Away from the Championship for a moment, remember when our old League One opponents Bolton thought they were the best team in the league? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Jesus Christ.
@SocialEngland66: Another case of play out from the back disasterclass and it’s beautiful to watch. Just punt it into next week
@CalcioOUFC: Oxford at Wembley fully exposed Bolton for how you can beat them 🫣
@DeaconHordz: 40 point deductions to any team in the EFL who plays this shit football, and that includes us.
