Pitch invader at Coventry, Crewe and Rochdale fans clash, Fleetwood yoof try to scrap with Morecambe

The weekend saw a pitch invader at Coventry, Crewe and Rochdale fans taking to clash, and Fleetwood yoof try to scrap with Morecambe.

An infuriating clash between Sky Blues and Sunderland saw a pitch invader drop a smoke bomb in front on the pitch. The intensity of the contest was evident in the fiery tempers that erupted on the pitch as well as in the stands.

Sky Sports televised the match, with the two sides battling for a Championship playoff place.

Sunderland knew a win would have seen them climb to fourth place ahead of the 3pm kick offs.

A Coventry fan managed to delay the match a brief time, evading the stewards after leaping the barriers in the second half. He then dumped a sky-blue smoke canister as he ran towards the packed out away end.

Both sides put in some hefty challenges with five yellow cards dished out between Sunderland and Coventry.

Nonetheless, it was a great football match, something that was like Tony Mowbray had seen from the 1980s, though he was furious at Jamie Allen’s first goal for the hosts.

Viktor Gyokeres counter attacked down the right side, allowing Allen to square the ball and fire home, but was reeling at Jack Clarke and Dan Neil being fouled in the build up.

The referee ignored their protests and allowed the goal to stand.

Sunderland tried to find an equaliser despite pushing, but in the final stages of the contest, Gyokeres was on hand to extend the hosts’ lead.

Then just before the referee blew his whistle, Sunderland got one back through Amad Diallo. He curled a 25-yard effort into the top corner but it was too late to produce a comeback.

Meanwhile, there was also some trouble on and off the pitch when Crewe took on Rochdale in League Two on Saturday.

Jimmy Keohane got a vital point back for Rochdale with a late equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw away from 10-man Crewe.

Rio Adebisi, who wasted a great opportunity in the first half, luckily made up for it on the 70th minute by putting the hosts ahead.

Bottom of the fourth tier, Rochdale, were pushing for a goal of their own, Keohane followed up his header, which struck the crossbar, net from close range with 10 minutes left on the clock before Connor O’Riordan was sent off for a late challenge on Owen Dodgson.

At Fleetwood, their fans put in a poor effort by attempting to get at Morecambe’s travelling faithful, but they could only shout abuse at each other with police stopping any potential flare up between the two.

The Cod Army clinched a victory at Highbury with a goal by Carlos Mendes Gomes, a former Morecambe player, to send the hosts up to 11th in the League One table.

After a smooth move down the right, the on-loan Luton Town player found the net after Shaun Rooney played in Jayden Stockley, who crossed in and Mendes Gomes volleyed in from six yards out.

Morecambe nearly got an leveller immediately after when Michael Mellon swung a Danny Crowley cross towards the crossbar.

Mendes Gomes also sent a vital effort just wide while Rooney’s shock was blocked on the line as Fleetwood attempt to extend their lead before half time.

The second half saw Morecambe’s Ash Hunter who had come off the bench, force Jay Lynch into a save low to his right, then a good penalty shout for a Rooney handball was waved away before Macadam and Rooney messed up good late chances, with Fleetwood holding on for the win.

@Kaytea21: No offence to anyone who knows him but that pitch invader seemed a bit of a 🔔🔚 Probably facing a ban now. Was it even worth it?

@MGCovLFC: Thought that too. For what. Ban for rest of season or beyond? Perhaps even a lifetime ban? Do these idiots get criminal records when they do that? Pointless.
