Pint of alcohol chucked at referee through car window after 10th tier playoff final

A pint of alcohol was reportedly chucked at a referee through a car window after a 10th tier playoff final on Bank Holiday Monday.

The incident, which has been described as “ridiculous”, came as referee Jack Bromham left the ground in his vehicle, with an investigation now launched.

Since then, the Western League has arranged for him to have his vehicle’s interior and clothes cleaned with the Gloucestershire Football Association also looking into why this happened.

Oldland Abbotonians were promoted into the Western League Premier Division after winning the match 2-1, but Shirehampton claimed to have made it 2-2, but match officials determined that the ball did not cross the line.

Refsupportuk tweeted: “Hearing of a shocking incident when a pint was thrown through a referees open car window as he left a game between Oldland Abbotonians and @OfficialShireFC last night.

“It went all over the referee and his father. What society do we live in that people think behaviour like this is acceptable in any way.

“The @TSWesternLeague have been proactive in stating they will reimburse dry cleaning and car valeting costs.

“They will also invite Ref and Father as guests to the League Cup Final.

“Well done to @SomersetFA RDO Matt Eva for quickly checking on the ref’s welfare.

“Could do with hearing what both clubs think of this as one of those teams need to refund the cost to the league.”

“It’s another example that some participants in football believe refs are fair game,” said a spokesperson, as per BBC Sport.

“What sort of individual believes it is acceptable to throw beer through an open window into a ref’s car?”

Officials of the Western League officials said they had been in touch with Jack Bromham and were offering their full support.

“This has highlighted the concerns we have had for some time,” said a Western League spokesperson.

“We’re worried about behaviour at games both on and off the pitch, and we will do everything in our power to address these issues,” they added.

Shirehampton FC wrote: “the club doesn’t condone anything like this” and confirmed it was looking into what happened.

Oldland Abbotonians said they are: “…shocked and saddened to hear of this incident. This is totally unacceptable behaviour. We are going to investigate this incident so we can identify the individuals responsible. We will be contacting the referee & his Father directly.”

This is what Twitter users said after hearing that a pint of alcohol was chucked at a referee through a car window after the 10th tier playoff final earlier this week…

@MainStreetMatt: Awful it happened to him, but glad the league dealt with it well! Unfortunately the same couldn’t be said when a pint when over a player who scored for us this season (which was recorded). According to the ref it was “no big deal” and wasn’t reported, despite him seeing it!

@CardinalACS: Before we judge, what pint was it? If it was a Foster’s or a Carling then fair enough but if we’re talking Peroni, Moretti or Neck Oil then it’s an absolute waste and unacceptable. #pintgate

@chappers0106: I was at the game, and felt sorry for the officials with the level of abuse from fans, players and some on the bench.

@stevehales18: I know it’s a disgrace especially with the price of beer nowadays

@Bradley666Allen: Shocking! Jack is one of the best young refs in the @TSWesternLeague and a top lad!

@alex_elkay21: Oh dear. Very poor from whoever did this. A real shame to see.

@DanielP38724970: I’ve watched some local step 6 games recently and they are impossible to ref. Managers/coaches going after the ref on every decision, decisions which are generally correct in my neutral opinion.

@JamesHa19293771: Just a disgrace really. Honestly football is the outside forum for some of the depths of society I have to say. No wonder we lose so many referees every year.

@hobb1973: Thugs, bullies can only assume, shocking.
