Phone call from Doncaster fan has listeners in stitches and BBC Sheffield presenter baffled

A rather bizarre phone call from a Doncaster fan has listeners in stitches and the BBC Sheffield presenter baffled at what he just heard.

The phone call that BBC Sheffield took from a Doncaster fan named Paul on Saturday evening quickly went viral, over 500,000 views in the days that followed.

That then led to the clip, including the presenter Rob Staton’s reaction as it happened, being posted and also did the rounds online.

The Doncaster fan seemingly doesn’t have a clue what he’s talking about, but then decides he’s had enough and cuts the interview short by saying he’s off for a pint. Have a listen…

Rob Staton: Hi, Paul. Praise or grumble?

Paul: *inaudible*

Rob Staton: Hi Paul, you there?

Paul: Yeah, I’m here. Sorry. Yeah, well, South Yorkshire football isn’t, as you say, isn’t the right mess. Isn’t it Rovers? Well, I think Rovers also got. Well, I’ve not obviously been to game, but. Well, they got a point in that lad from Cambridge. The other side from Cambridge scored a penalty. Didn’t I understand? Hello? You still there?

Rob Staton: Yes, I’m listening.

Paul: Sorry. I’d just like to praise, right, Tony, who goes to Terry Holian’s gym in town. He’s gone with some lads and they’ve gone all the way down to London and all respect to them for doing that, I mean, I bet they were, well, discord anyway, they might have kicked off. Well, I don’t know whether they’ve got any hooligans or not. So anyway, sorry not meant to speak about hooligans…

Rob Staton: Where is this going?

Paul: My call? Well, Rovers need to get rid of the chairman, what’s he called? He’s a waste of space, him.

Rob Staton: Right?

Paul: Well, he’s sorting out… *inaudible* I know that…

Rob Staton: It’s easier said than said isn’t it.

Paul: I’m going to The Sal [The Salutation on South Parade at top of town] for a pint. See you later, mate.

Rob Staton: Okay. I mean, I have to say, I have been doing praise or grumble. I did it the first time in 2010. So approximately, 14 years ago. That is the weirdest call I’ve ever had, on a weird day, quite frankly.

Rob Staton tweeted: “😂😂😂🤦‍♂️”

When asked how many times he heard it back, he replied: “790”

“I love our show”

The interview came hours after Joe Ironside’s late equaliser got Doncaster a late point as they held by Sutton.

Doncaster currently sit 22nd in the League Two table with 29 points taken from 29 games while Sutton are a place below in 23rd with 22 points from 30 games played.

Sutton thought they had done enough to clinch all three points through Craig Eastmond’s effort, however, Ironside netted from a penalty in stoppage-time to stop Sutton from closing the gap on Doncaster.

Grant McCann was delighted with the manner in which Rovers shook off the disappointment of falling behind at Sutton United to snatch a last gasp point.

Craig Eastmond gave the hosts the lead 17 minutes from time in the high pressure game at the VBS Community Stadium.

Though they lacked fluency in possession throughout the game, Rovers pushed for the equaliser and found it deep in added time with a Joe Ironside penalty.

“We’re really pleased with the response after conceding a poor, sloppy goal where a ricochet came in and Eastman has just arrived in the box,” McCann said.

“We responded and there was calmness and real composure from Joe Ironside to score the penalty.

“From their point of view, they were probably looking at it as a must-win game so that’s what we were up against and it’s difficult.

“We set the team up to win and we had some good chances in the first half.

“Probably the second half we didn’t do that enough. Overall, we’ll take the point, move on and home games are really important for us. We have 17 left and let’s see how we go.”

McCann felt Rovers being denied two other penalties had a major impact on how the game played out.

He said: “I’m disappointed that we did’t win. We should have had two penalties – clear penalties.

“The game was just stop-start. Every time there was a half challenge in the middle of the pitch, the whistle blew. It wasn’t a good spectacle in terms of that because there wasn’t a good flow to the game.

“We should have had a penalty in the first minute of the game – a blatant penalty on Billy Waters that he ends up getting booked for.

“Then we should have a penalty on Jack Senior. It’s really disappointing when you see those – and we’ve seen them back. They’re blatant penalties.

“For Billy Waters there was no need for him to fall because he was going to score. Jack Senior and James Maxwell combined brilliantly and he’s just run inside him.”

As mentioned, the phone call from a Doncaster fan has listeners in stitches and the BBC Sheffield presenter baffled…

@matt_thomas_yba: Pure magic. Makes paying for the BBC licence fee worth it.

@TrasfertaZine: Football heaven is without a doubt, one of the funniest Football phone ins in the country. Every week, there is a call that, if written for a sketch show, people would call comedy gold.
