Phil Parkinson “shellshocked” by the goals Wrexham conceded in defeat to Birmingham

Phil Parkinson says he was left “shellshocked” by the goals his Wrexham side conceded in the 2-1 defeat to Birmingham on Friday night.

Blues defender Phil Neumann scored either side of Callum Doyle equaliser, ending Birmingham’s winless league start, while for Wrexham’s it goes on.

Phil Parkinson vented his anger, throwing a plastic bottle he drank from after Birmingham had retaken the lead on the 64th minute.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said when speaking to Sky Sports:

“The two goals we conceded are two of the softest goals we’ve conceded in all my time here – and that includes being in the National League. You can’t concede goals like that and expect to win a game of football.

“You’ve got to defend the box – it’s as simple as that – in any division, but particularly the Championship we’ve got to defend our box better, head the ball out, defend set-plays.

“I thought we lacked conviction in our play tonight in the first half, I’ve got to be honest. Second half, I thought we were better, got the goal back, and that’s why I’m so annoyed with the second goal because we’d started really well, got back in the game.

“We almost looked like a team of everyone looking around the pitch for someone else to go and make it happen, rather than taking responsibility as individuals.

“In football, you can’t feel sorry for yourself and I felt we looked like that tonight for some reason. You cannot feel sorry for yourself because no one else is going to help you, you can only help yourself. We’ve got to look long and hard at ourselves and come out fighting at Millwall.”

Birmingham manager Chris Davies speaking on Sky Sports:

“It was a really good night for us. I thought we started the game really well, just like you want to away from home. We got on the front foot, had some moments we could’ve been maybe a couple of goals up at half-time, so I was really pleased with that.

“I think we looked like a team, that’s the main thing. We looked like a real team, and we had to be to come to a place like Wrexham and play a really solid, really good side, especially at home. It’s a big, big win.”

He told the club website: “It was a big win for us and I thought we fully deserved it. This is a tough place to come, we know that, Wrexham are a really good side, especially at home, but we looked like a proper team.

“We looked like a team that was together, and a good team with the way we were playing. We created three good chances in the first half and could have been further ahead.

“And we showed the character you need to win games of football. The message before the game to the players was that you can’t do it on your own, you have to be a team and you need each other.

“And when you have that kind of togetherness, it gives you a real chance, and I think that’s what pleased me the most.

“The football we played was really pleasing. We handled it well, we didn’t invite pressure, we looked a threat and were solid defensively.”

@WrexhamF14875: Thereā€™s no point in being surprised. Itā€™s his fault. If weā€™ve been conceding goals like this for the past five years, the blame lies solely with one person: the manager. Players come and go, formations change, but the shortcomings are always the same. Iā€™d ask myself one question. Back in May, I said signing a reliable centre-back had to be the priority, especially after Domā€™s struggles with marking. Instead, we focused on full-backs and midfield. That need remains, and now we also desperately need a striker capable of hitting double figures.

@Kyle_071839: Scary start so far. How Broadhead keeps starting is beyond me, also hoof ball does not work in this league. Parky has never proved himself in this league and I donā€™t think he ever willā€¦

@Buntingfootball: Wrexham early doors this season look massively one dimensional. Canā€™t just hope that Kieffer Moore bails them out,they have to address another striker before the window is out. Tactically early on Phil Parkinson seems to have been found out by the opposition needs a switch up.

@JarvoB: Canā€™t defend set pieces. Canā€™t create goals from our own. First half was woeful, terrible with the ball and without it, second half was adequate but still way off where we should be. We start games off the pace, when we should be tearing into them – especially at home šŸ˜¤

@JakeyBoi93_: Get in. Night and day defensively compared to Tuesday. Could have scored more. Sorry some but Davies got it right today with the directness and shape. Love how direct we are if we can mix between the possession of last season and direct play of tonight we are onto something
