He was asked about the potential capacity of a new ground, and whether it could attract concerts like many of the newer ones are built to host for the summer months.

One Twitter user wrote: “The last thing fans are going to want is to have an empty stadium like MK on a match day.”

Mr Thompson wrote in response: “I don’t want an empty bowl stadium like MK Dons.” Ouch.

Peterborough’s current home has a capacity of 15,300, compared to Stadium MK’s 30,500, however the Dons have an average attendance of 9,376 this season, the fifth biggest behind Sunderland, Ipswich, Portsmouth and Bolton. The Posh get 7,243, which is 12th in League One.

Peterborough hope to have their new ground in time for the 2022/23 season, and in the meantime have a lot of planning to do with proposed designs for it yet to be released.
